Cassian Andor encounters the Brigade after stealing an Imperial TIE Avenger, and he does not consider the group ready to trust.
Who are the Maya Pei Brigade?
The Maya Pei Brigade is a rebel group in Andor. Cassian crosses paths with its members after stealing a TIE Avenger from an Imperial test facility. The Star Wars Databank entry for Cassian Andor says the rebels return to Mina-Rau after the encounter.
The Brigade’s members are not presented as an established force with everything in order. Its survivors are stranded on Yavin 4 after an attack, and the official character descriptions emphasize how difficult their circumstances have become.
What happened to Maya and the Brigade on Yavin 4?
Gerdis, described as the Brigade’s “purported second-in-command,” tried but failed to save Maya during the attack that left the group grounded on Yavin 4. The official Gerdis entry establishes both the failed rescue and the group’s predicament; it does not provide a casualty count.

The remaining members face more than a military setback. The official Bardi entry describes Bardi as argumentative and headstrong, while also hungry, dirty, and tired. Even in those conditions, he continues to trust his absent brother. That detail makes the Brigade’s strained morale and relationships tangible rather than abstract.
Why does Cassian distrust them?
The official Cassian Databank description says he considers the Brigade, like the Ghorman Front, too undisciplined and impatient to be trusted. This is Cassian’s judgment of the group, not an objective ranking of every rebel faction.

- FEARLESS LEADER: Captain Cassian Andor commands respect from his Rebel troops with his ability to keep a cool head under fire and complete his missions with minimal resources
His skepticism matters because opposition to the Empire is not, by itself, proof that a group can coordinate or be relied upon. A resistance movement also needs discipline, trust, and enough shared purpose to act together. The Brigade’s strained leadership and members’ difficult circumstances give Cassian’s distrust a concrete context.

The Brigade helps make the early Rebellion feel fragmented. Rather than an already unified alliance, it is a collection of groups dealing with immediate needs and uncertain relationships while trying to resist the Empire. The Brigade’s predicament illustrates how survival and internal cohesion can be as pressing as the larger cause.

That reading follows from the official descriptions of Cassian’s encounter and the Brigade’s stranded, exhausted survivors; it is an interpretation of the story, not a published explanation of the creators’ intent. The official Andor series page describes season two as placing Cassian in a key role as the horizon of war draws near, a wider conflict that makes the question of coordination especially relevant.
