Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans lead a rescue mission after Santa is kidnapped, but military-style North Pole security, magical-creature lore and effects-heavy action crowd out much of the seasonal warmth. It may work as a loud holiday diversion; viewers looking for a cozy Christmas story are likelier to find it overbuilt.
What is Red One about?
In this 2024 holiday action-adventure comedy, Santa Claus—known by the code name Red One—is kidnapped. Callum Drift (Dwayne Johnson), the North Pole’s head of security, teams up with Jack O’Malley (Chris Evans), a tracker, to find him and save Christmas. Jake Kasdan directed the film, with a screenplay by Chris Morgan. Lucy Liu, J.K. Simmons, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll and Wesley Kimmel are also in the cast.

The setup promises a mismatched-partners adventure with a seasonal heart. The film instead gives that story an expansive fantasy-action framework: a militarized North Pole, an assortment of magical beings and large set pieces. The gap between its familiar Christmas premise and its blockbuster scale is the central tension of the movie.
Does the action make a good Christmas movie?
That depends on what you want from a Christmas movie. Red One is not built like a quiet, emotionally grounded seasonal story. It aims for broad comedy and action spectacle, with holiday lore folded into a high-concept adventure. The fantasy details can make the world feel busy before the simple rescue story has time to breathe.

The Associated Press’ Jake Coyle described the film as an “ugly-sweater” clash between Christmas familiarity and high-budget action fantasy. He argued that a better, funnier movie sits beneath the effects gloss, but that the CGI and elaborate world-building overwhelm it. Coyle awarded it one and a half stars out of four and called it an “unwanted high-priced Christmas present.”
That is a useful description of the film’s trade-off, not a universal verdict. If a large, effects-driven Christmas adventure sounds entertaining, the scale may be part of the appeal. If you want warmth, restraint or a strong emotional center, the spectacle may feel like clutter.

How was Red One received?
Rotten Tomatoes’ scores showed a substantial critic-audience divide at retrieval on October 8, 2026. The film had a 29% Tomatometer from 186 reviews and an 89% Popcornmeter from more than 5,000 verified ratings. These are dated aggregator snapshots, not fixed measures; scores can change. The contrast suggests that professional critics were much less taken with the film than verified audience raters.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus called it “Wrapped in slick packaging but wholly lacking in holiday magic, Red One is a ho-ho-hum action-adventure.” That is the site’s consensus statement, rather than a quotation from a single critic. Individual responses vary: for example, the aggregator displayed a short negative verdict from Mark Kermode alongside his November 23, 2024 review, but that excerpt should not be mistaken for his full review.

For context, the Associated Press reported that Red One earned $34.1 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales on its 2024 opening weekend, based on studio estimates. AP described its production budget as more than $200 million, with some estimates nearer $250 million; these are reported estimates, not a confirmed final cost. The film had originally been conceived for direct-to-streaming, and AP noted that Amazon MGM could also value it through Prime Video reach. The available reporting does not establish streaming viewership, marketing costs, distribution splits or a studio profitability calculation, so opening-weekend sales and estimated production cost alone do not show whether the film was profitable.
Is Red One appropriate for kids?
In the United States, Red One is rated PG-13 for action, some violence and language. That rating may help families decide whether the film fits their children, but it is not a universal age recommendation: ratings and content advisories vary by jurisdiction. Check the rating and advisories for the version available in your region.

Amazon identifies Prime Video as the film’s exclusive streaming home. Its page also notes that titles in the Prime Video Store may be available to rent or buy. Catalog access, subscription eligibility and rental or purchase terms can vary by country and change over time, so check the local listing before planning a viewing.
There are also physical home-video editions. The U.S. JustWatch page reported a DVD purchase option through Amazon DVD / Blu-ray when checked on September 10, 2026, and Blu-ray.com documents a Canadian DVD edition released March 4, 2025; the industry release report also records a March 4, 2025 home-video release. Those details do not guarantee current stock. Before buying, confirm the edition, region, disc format and player compatibility.

Published listings disagree: Rotten Tomatoes and Amazon’s editorial page give a runtime of 2 hours 2 minutes, while the retrieved Prime Video EU title page lists 1 hour 53 minutes. Check the local listing for the version you intend to watch rather than treating one runtime as definitive.
