The second Red Lorry Film Festival ran March 21–23, 2025, in Mumbai and Hyderabad. Among its varied programme were three very different films: a drama about a Las Vegas performer facing the end of her show, a recovery story set in Orkney, and a crime thriller shaped by a tailor’s choices. They were part of a much larger festival selection, not a ranked list of audience favorites.
Three films with very different stories
Scroll.in’s March 18, 2025 festival preview highlighted The Last Showgirl, The Outrun and Sew Torn as picks. Its descriptions offer a useful way to approach the trio: compare their subjects, settings and narrative approaches rather than treating “picks” as a measure of audience response. Scroll.in’s festival coverage is a critic’s account, not a report of audience consensus.

The Last Showgirl (2024): a performer at a turning point
Directed by Gia Coppola, the film follows Shelley, played by Pamela Anderson, a Las Vegas revue performer whose show is closing. The festival coverage frames her story around work, dignity and age, as well as the loss of a performance world on which she has built her life. Its setting makes the end of the show more than a career setback: it also puts Shelley’s sense of identity and place under pressure.
The Outrun (2024): recovery in Orkney
Nora Fingscheidt’s film stars Saoirse Ronan as Rona, who returns to Orkney while struggling with alcohol dependence. It adapts Amy Liptrot’s memoir of the same name. In the festival report’s account, Rona volunteers with a bird protection programme as she tries to stay sober, connecting the recovery story to the islands and their wildlife. Sew Torn (2024): a crime story built around choices
Freddy Macdonald’s thriller centres on Barbara, a tailor who comes across a bag of money and two wounded men. The premise turns on what she chooses to do next, with her sewing skill part of how the story branches. Unlike the other two films’ focus on personal upheaval, Sew Torn begins with a crime-scene encounter and builds suspense around decisions and their consequences.
How the three picks compare
| Film | Central subject | Setting | Story approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Last Showgirl (2024) | A revue performer confronting the closure of her show | Las Vegas | Drama about work, dignity, age and the loss of a performance world |
| The Outrun (2024) | A woman struggling with alcohol dependence and trying to stay sober | Orkney | Recovery drama adapted from Amy Liptrot’s memoir |
| Sew Torn (2024) | A tailor drawn into a situation involving money and two wounded men | Not stated in the festival report | Branching crime thriller shaped by the protagonist’s choices |
The contrast is also one of tone: a fading revue, island life and a tense encounter with a crime scene. The festival preview’s selection identifies films to consider; it does not establish that every viewer will respond to them in the same way.

Where these films fit in the 2025 festival
The second edition was scheduled for March 21–23, 2025, across Mumbai and Hyderabad. Scroll.in reported at least 120 features, documentaries and restored classics in the programme; The Indian Express described it as around 120 films. These are publisher-attributed programme counts, not attendance figures. The Indian Express’s festival preview named Maison PVR and Maison Inox as Mumbai screening venues.
The three films were part of a broad selection that also included Anora, Emilia Perez, The Girl with the Needle, Hollywoodgate, Queer and September 5. The programme also featured French and Spanish cinema sections, restored classics, masterclasses and fireside chats. The Indian Express grouped the festival under four categories: In Focus, Spotlight, Rendezvous with French Cinema and Hola Spain.

Festival director Ashish Saksena, identified in Scroll.in’s coverage as COO–Cinemas at BookMyShow and Festival Director, described the selection as a lineup exploring “themes of love, loss, identity and survival.” That statement gives the festival’s framing; it is not a claim about audience response or a critical verdict on each title.
