Critics have been broadly enthusiastic, though audience ratings are lower—and neither response is unanimous. Netflix lists the film, but whether it appears in your catalog depends on your region.
What is Rebel Ridge about?
Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre), a former Marine, arrives in Shelby Springs to post bail for his cousin. Local law enforcement seizes the money he brought, turning a practical errand into a confrontation with a broader conspiracy. Court clerk Summer McBride (AnnaSophia Robb) becomes an unlikely ally; the opposing police chief is Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson). Netflix’s official synopsis and its Tudum feature outline the setup without requiring the film’s later turns to be spoiled.
Why does the film stand out as an action thriller?
Saulnier wrote and directed the movie, and his stated aim helps explain its appeal: action is meant to carry emotional weight, rather than function as spectacle alone. He told Netflix Tudum, “As a filmmaker, I dig grounded ’80s and ’90s action films that not only deliver on spectacle but succeed in tying on-screen mayhem to a real and true emotional component.”
That grounded approach suits a story whose immediate stakes grow out of an ordinary need—getting a relative out of jail—and whose antagonism involves a local institution. Saulnier also told Tudum, “I am very interested in examining corrupt systems — how they are built and what people tell themselves to disavow or justify their own part in them.” The result is a thriller framed around pressure, leverage and institutional power, not just physical confrontations.

Do critics and audiences agree about Rebel Ridge?
Not entirely. Rotten Tomatoes displayed the following figures when accessed on October 8, 2026:

These are Rotten Tomatoes platform scores, not percentages of all critics or all viewers, and they are not the same kind of measurement. The totals and scores can change. The figures above are a dated snapshot from the Rotten Tomatoes listing, not a timeless verdict or an independent measure of quality.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus calls the film “An intelligent and gripping vehicle for Aaron Pierre’s star-making performance” and says it “lays down the law on its action-thriller contemporaries.” Individual responses vary: The Ringer’s Adam Nayman praised the plot and performances, including Pierre and Johnson, while Ty Burr called the film professionally made but placed it below Saulnier’s earlier work. A Spanish-language review published on the page in 2025 argued that the second half loses momentum and becomes more conventional. Those comments illustrate differences in critical interpretation; they do not represent every review.

Who is likely to enjoy it?
The film is a strong candidate for viewers interested in crime thrillers and action shaped by character and institutional conflict. Saulnier’s comments point to a grounded style with emotional stakes. If you chiefly want fast, continuous spectacle, that emphasis may be less suited to your preference. That is a viewing-fit distinction, not a universal judgment about the film’s pace or quality.
