Rebecca Hall and Dan Stevens brought more than a decade-spanning friendship to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Hall plays Dr. Ilene Andrews; Stevens plays Trapper, a veterinarian who treats Titans. The title’s phrase “weird and particular” comes from a Gizmodo video interview headline, but the page’s accessible text does not include its dialogue, so it cannot be treated as a verified quote from Hall.
What the Gizmodo interview is about
Gizmodo frames its video interview around Hall’s collaboration with Stevens, her longtime friend and co-star, in the 2024 MonsterVerse film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The accessible text page gives the headline and standfirst, not a transcript. That means the interview’s specific questions and answers cannot be reliably summarized or quoted from the text page alone. Gizmodo’s interview page
Hall and Stevens knew each other long before the MonsterVerse
Their connection began through Shakespeare performances in college. They became friends and roommates, and by the time they made Godzilla x Kong, they had known each other for more than 20 years, according to the Associated Press. Stevens has also recounted their college and stage history, as well as their friendship and work together in Permission and the MonsterVerse film. Who they play in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
Hall returns as Dr. Ilene Andrews, the anthropological linguist introduced in Godzilla vs. Kong. Stevens plays Trapper, a Titan veterinarian. The film continues the story of Legendary’s MonsterVerse and follows Godzilla vs. Kong. Warner Bros. production notes hosted by SciFi Japan
#1 Best Overall
Hall and Stevens have described their characters’ place in the larger spectacle with humor. In an Associated Press report published March 21, 2024, Hall said, “They are the stars of the movie.” Stevens responded, “We’re just the side show.” Their lines refer to the Titans’ prominence, not to the actors’ long history together. In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, republished by Yahoo Entertainment, Stevens said the film’s suggestion of a past connection between Andrews and Trapper drew in part on the actors’ own history. “There’s a little bit of that sprinkled in. We wanted to give a sense of history between them,” he said. This is Stevens’s account from that separate interview—not dialogue from the Gizmodo video. - Item name: Godzilla Vs. Kong
- Product type: PHYSICAL MOVIE
- Brand: Warner Bros.
That real-world familiarity gives the pairing an unusual foundation for a blockbuster: the performers did not have to invent the ease of longtime friends from scratch. The film’s characters are fictional, and Stevens’s comment supports only the narrower point that some of the actors’ chemistry helped shape their on-screen history.
