Short answer: If you are starting with Rebecca Yarros’s romantasy, read Fourth Wing, then Iron Flame, then Onyx Storm. Yarros’s wider catalog is not one continuous storyline, so the best complete guide is organized series by series rather than as a single all-author chronology.
Rebecca Yarros writes across romantasy, contemporary romance, military romance, interconnected standalones, novellas, and short fiction. That makes “Rebecca Yarros books in order” slightly ambiguous: readers may be asking for the Empyrean sequence, the order of one of her older series, or a complete list of her books.
This guide uses the author’s official series groupings and the internal orders provided by the relevant publishers. Full-length novels are separated from novellas, audio shorts, and short stories, and upcoming titles are clearly marked so they are not mistaken for books that are already available.
The quick answer: Empyrean reading order
- Fourth Wing — Empyrean, Book 1 (2023)
- Iron Flame — Empyrean, Book 2 (2023)
- Onyx Storm — Empyrean, Book 3 (2025)
If you are buying your first book, start with Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. Continue directly to Iron Flame and Onyx Storm; these are the three currently published main novels in the series.

Threshing Day, a collection of thirteen Empyrean stories, is scheduled for September 29, 2026. It is supplemental reading after the three main novels—not Empyrean Book 4—and should not be placed between them.
Rebecca Yarros books by series
| Series or category | Recommended order | Must the order be followed? |
|---|---|---|
| Empyrean | Fourth Wing → Iron Flame → Onyx Storm | Yes, for the main story |
| Flight & Glory | Full Measures → Eyes Turned Skyward → Beyond What Is Given → Hallowed Ground → The Reality of Everything | Yes; the publisher recommends reading it in order |
| The Renegades | Wilder → Nova → Rebel | Each book is a standalone, but this is the clearest order |
| Legacy | Point of Origin → Ignite → Reason to Believe → bonus stories | Follow the order for the fullest series experience |
| In Luv Duet | Girl in Luv → Boy in Luv | Yes; it is a two-book collaboration with Jay Crownover |
The Empyrean series order
1. Fourth Wing (2023)
Fourth Wing is the first Empyrean novel and the correct entry point for the series. It is the book that introduced many readers to Yarros through its romantasy setting, dragons, military training, and high-stakes romance.
2. Iron Flame (2023)
Iron Flame follows Fourth Wing as Book 2. Read it immediately after the first novel if you want to follow the central plot without skipping ahead.
3. Onyx Storm (2025)
Onyx Storm is Book 3 and the third published main novel. It follows Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, so it is not a suitable starting point for new readers.

Optional later reading: Threshing Day
Threshing Day is scheduled for September 29, 2026. The official description identifies it as an Empyrean “Secret Project” containing thirteen stories centered on a legendary day, with familiar characters and dragons. Because it is a collection of supplemental stories rather than the fourth main novel, the safest reading position is after Onyx Storm.
Important: Future publication dates can change. The September 29, 2026 date reflects the current official listing and should be checked again before publication or preordering.
Flight & Glory reading order
The publisher describes Flight & Glory as a series best enjoyed in order. It is a five-book sequence:
- Full Measures (2014)
- Eyes Turned Skyward (2014)
- Beyond What Is Given (2015)
- Hallowed Ground (2016)
- The Reality of Everything (2020)
Full Measures is Book 1, while Beyond What Is Given is Book 3 and The Reality of Everything is Book 5. If you plan to read the complete series, do not begin with the later title simply because it is newer; the publisher’s sequence provides the intended progression.

The Renegades reading order
The Renegades consists of interconnected standalones. Each novel tells a self-contained story, so readers can technically read them out of order. The publisher’s listed sequence remains the most straightforward choice:
- Wilder — Book 1 (2016)
- Nova — Book 2 (2017)
- Rebel — Book 3 (2017)
Reading in this order lets you encounter the characters and connections in the sequence used by the series listing. If you have already read one of the books, you can continue without restarting the entire series.
Legacy reading order
The Legacy section includes a mixture of novellas, a full-length novel, a short story, and an audio short. The complete listed order is:
- Point of Origin — novella
- Ignite — prequel novella
- Reason to Believe — novel
- Basket Day — short story
- The Bet: A Legacy Audio Short — audio short
- Backfire: A Legacy Short Story — short story
Ignite is specifically identified as a standalone Legacy prequel novella. The official reading list places Point of Origin, Ignite, and Reason to Believe before the shorter bonus pieces.
What is essential? Readers who want the main Legacy storyline should prioritize the first three entries. Basket Day, The Bet, and Backfire are optional extras rather than conventional full-length novels. They add bonus material but should not be treated as required purchases for someone who only wants the principal story.

Rebecca Yarros’s standalone novels
Yarros’s official reading list groups the following titles as standalones. They do not share a required story order, so you can choose based on premise, format, or availability:
- The Last Letter (2019)
- Great and Precious Things (2020)
- The Things We Leave Unfinished (2021)
- Muses & Melodies (catalog listings vary by edition)
- A Little Too Close (2022)
- In the Likely Event (2023)
- Variation (2024)
The sequence above follows the author’s catalog grouping, not a mandatory chronological universe. You can read Variation first, for example, without reading any earlier Yarros novel.
Which standalone should you choose?
- For a contemporary romance involving a dancer and a Coast Guard rescue swimmer: choose Variation.
- For a story involving a plane crash and a later reunion: choose In the Likely Event.
- For alternating timelines and a World War II romance manuscript: choose The Things We Leave Unfinished.
- For a book from the author’s earlier standalone catalog: choose The Last Letter or Great and Precious Things.
Catalog note on Muses & Melodies: publication-year and series metadata can differ between editions, retailers, and catalogs. The author’s official site places it among the standalones, which is the useful classification for reading-order purposes. It is better not to treat one year shown by a particular retailer as a definitive universal publication date.
In Luv Duet with Jay Crownover
Rebecca Yarros co-wrote the two-book In Luv Duet with Jay Crownover. Read the books in this order:
- Girl in Luv
- Boy in Luv
Because this is a duet rather than a collection of unrelated standalones, begin with Girl in Luv before moving to Boy in Luv.
Rank #4
- Quality Construction: Manufactured to high standards for reliable performance and durability
- Medical Grade: Suitable for healthcare and medical applications with safety standards
- Convenient Packaging: Bulk packaging provides excellent value and reduces reorder frequency
Upcoming Rebecca Yarros books
Two future titles should be kept separate from the published reading orders:
| Title | Current listed date | Where it belongs | What readers should know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Threshing Day | September 29, 2026 | Optional Empyrean supplemental reading after Onyx Storm | Thirteen stories featuring familiar Empyrean characters and dragons; not Book 4 |
| Peculiar Stars | November 17, 2026 | Separate from Empyrean | A contemporary slow-burn romance about Callista and Dominic, described as a story of survival and self-determination |
Peculiar Stars should not be added to the Empyrean sequence. It is a separate contemporary novel. Both dates are current official listings and are subject to change, so readers should confirm them before making purchase or preorder decisions.

- You discovered Yarros through dragons, magic, or romantasy: start with Fourth Wing and read the three Empyrean novels in order.
- You want a completed multi-book series: try Flight & Glory from Full Measures through The Reality of Everything.
- You prefer interconnected standalones: begin with Wilder, then continue through Nova and Rebel.
- You want shorter or bonus-format material: explore Legacy, keeping in mind that its final entries include a short story and an audio short rather than full-length novels.
- You want a single romance with no series commitment: choose any of the standalone novels.
- You want the Jay Crownover collaboration: read Girl in Luv before Boy in Luv.
Optional fan merchandise and companion items
Merchandise is not part of any reading order, but readers shopping for gifts or collectibles may encounter official Fourth Wing merchandise, including a documented Fourth Wing dragon pouch from Out of Print. A documented companion item is Onyx Storm: The Official Coloring Book from Andrews McMeel. These are optional fan products, not story installments, and availability can vary.
Do you need to read every Rebecca Yarros book?
No. The author’s catalog is divided into separate series and standalones. A reader can stop after the three published Empyrean novels, read only the Flight & Glory books, choose one standalone, or skip the short-form Legacy extras without losing access to the main reading experience.
The only time order is especially important is when the books form a direct sequence: Empyrean, Flight & Glory, and the In Luv Duet. The Renegades is more flexible because its novels are interconnected standalones, while the standalone category has no required order at all.
Frequently Asked Questions
