It is most rewarding as a patient, character-led story of people choosing to work together—not as a high-intensity football spectacle or a comprehensive account of Kashmir.
What is Real Kashmir Football Club about?
Directed by Mahesh Mathai and Rajesh Mapuskar, the Sony LIV series is inspired by Sandip Chattoo and Shamim Meraj, founders of the real Real Kashmir FC. Its fictionalized story follows Sohail (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub), who tries to establish a professional club in Srinagar in 2016.

Sohail draws in Shirish (Manav Kaul), a Kashmiri Pandit returning to the Valley, and coach Mustafa (Mu’Azzam Bhat). They recruit players and bring Amaan (Abhishant Rana) into the team, but his connection to politician Nazir complicates his growing commitment. Money, licenses, early setbacks and clashing egos make the work of creating a club as important as what happens on the pitch.
What gives the story its emotional pull?
The relationship between Sohail and Shirish is the drama’s center of gravity. They approach the club from different positions, but football gives them a shared undertaking that can bring people together without pretending their differences have disappeared. The team-building premise also lets the series gather athletes from varied backgrounds around a common goal.

In her Scroll.in review, Nandini Ramnath praises the show’s warmth, empathy and restraint, and finds that Ayyub and Kaul lead the cast effectively. Her assessment is that the series uses football to explore positivity, healing and closure, rather than leaning on grand speeches or emotional excess. That humane approach is the reason the show’s “feel-good” quality can land: its optimism is tied to the effort of making something together.
Is it a football spectacle or a character drama?
It is much more interested in the people organizing, coaching and joining the club than in turning every match into a dramatic set piece. The pitch matters, but so do negotiations, recruitment and the friction of assembling a team. Viewers looking for relentless match intensity may find the staging restrained; viewers who prefer the relationships and day-to-day work behind a team may find that focus refreshing.

How does the series handle Kashmir?
Kashmir is the story’s setting and a presence in its details, but the series should not be mistaken for a full account of the region’s political and social realities. Ramnath argues that it simplifies Kashmir’s complexities and leaves the wider reality largely in the background, muting the scale of Sohail’s undertaking. She points to moments such as Scottish coach Douglas’s reaction to militarized surroundings as signs of that broader context, but finds that it is not fully developed.
That limitation matters to the drama’s central idea. The club offers a hopeful shared project, but its optimism is not the same as an explanation of the forces shaping life in Kashmir. The show works best when judged as a restrained sports drama about a particular group’s effort, not as a comprehensive portrait of the region.

Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Watch it for: a warm, measured team-building story, an appealing central alliance and performances Ramnath finds effective.
- Temper expectations for: high-octane match sequences, brisk subplot pacing or an expansive treatment of Kashmir’s political context.
- Keep in mind: the series is inspired by the real club’s founders; its dramatized events should not be assumed to be a factual record of the club’s history.
