Indian women writers have challenged patriarchal rules in sharply different ways: by writing about female sexuality, marriage, caste, domestic labor, violence, memory and the right to speak. This reading list brings together works across Urdu, Punjabi and other literary traditions, and across fiction, poetry, nonfiction and drama. “Attacking patriarchy” is a vivid framing, not a label that makes these writers a single movement or gives them one politics.
How to read this list
Start with the questions a work raises, not with an assumption that every author shares the same approach. Gender is also shaped by caste, class, religion, sexuality and historical circumstance. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University Delhi’s course on Indian literary texts frames its study around gendered cultural products and explicitly connects patriarchy with global capitalism and casteism. Ismat Chughtai: Lifting the Veil
Chughtai was associated with the Progressive Writers’ Movement while also challenging its orthodoxy. Amrita Pritam: Aurat
Pritam was a Punjabi writer and poet whose work included poetry, essays, novels and biography. Keep caste and class in the frame
Bama: Karukku

Kamala Markandaya: Nectar in a Sieve

Build a reading path beyond the familiar names
A 2019 course at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, “Indian Women Novelists in English,” lists Githa Hariharan’s Fugitive Histories, Sivakami’s The Taming of Women, K. R. Meera’s Hangwoman and Sara Aboobacker’s Breaking Ties. This is a useful reminder that reading lists can widen beyond the writers most often named in short introductions. For a thematic sequence, move among writing on bodies and sexuality, marriage and domestic life, caste and class, violence and resistance, and history and memory. For a historical sequence, keep original publication dates distinct from translation and edition dates. The Sahitya Akademi’s Who’s Who of Indian Writers is a biographical and bibliographical directory covering writers in recognized Indian languages; it points to a much broader landscape than any short English-language list can represent.
