There is no official canon of legendary Reddit threads. The best place to start is with a handful of community-nominated stories and exchanges that stand out for their humor, kindness, unsettling turns, or lasting shorthand—while remembering that a Reddit post is not proof that its story happened as described.
What makes a Reddit thread worth reading?
“Legendary” is a reader’s judgment, not a platform ranking. A thread may endure because one comment reframes the whole discussion, because updates turn a post into a serialized story, or because a community keeps repeating a line long after the original conversation. The examples below are discovery leads nominated by Reddit users, not an objective or exhaustive canon.
For any personal story, distinguish what the post says from what has been independently established. A memorable account can be worth reading without treating its claims as verified events.
Community-nominated threads to look up
“I also choose this guy’s dead wife” — a joke that needs its setup
This comment is repeatedly nominated as a famous Reddit exchange. Its effect depends on the discussion around it, so read the original post and surrounding comments rather than encountering the line without context. Its staying power comes from the way a short reply can become shorthand within a larger conversation.

The carbon monoxide note story — sensitive health-related anecdote
Content note: suspected poisoning and frightening experiences. In the version recalled by Reddit commenters, a user thought a landlord was leaving notes, and carbon monoxide poisoning was offered as an explanation. Treat this as a Reddit anecdote, not a verified case or medical guidance. The nomination is memorable because of its unsettling change in interpretation, but the story should not be used to diagnose symptoms or assess a real home.
“Today you, tomorrow me” — a story about helping someone
Readers nominate this as a positive account of helping a person in need. Its appeal is the simple idea that kindness can be passed on: someone helps another person today, with the hope that they will do the same for someone else later. Read the original thread for its details and context; the nomination alone does not independently establish the events.
“Swamps of Dagobah” — a vivid story with a graphic edge
Content note: potentially graphic bodily and medical detail. Community nominations describe this as a vivid, well-told story. That reputation is reason to approach it selectively, not to reproduce its most graphic details here. Check the original thread’s context and decide whether its style is for you.
The Spanish-language Reddit help thread — a remembered act of welcome
A newer nomination recalls a user asking how to switch a feed back to English, followed by replies from commenters and moderators in Spanish. The recollection suggests a strikingly welcoming response, but the nomination is not a substitute for the original thread. If you find it, check the post and replies before treating the remembered details as settled.
The party-sub argument — a lighter disagreement
A 2026 nomination points to a discussion about someone eating most of a party sandwich. It offers a low-stakes change of pace from the darker or more emotional anecdotes. Its value is in the debate and reactions, rather than any larger claim about Reddit history.
How to find and navigate the original discussions
Surface candidates without mistaking popularity for quality
Reddit Help explains that the Top sort prioritizes posts with high upvote numbers over the selected time period; the Comment Count sort helps find posts with lots of discussion. Use a time filter—such as all time, past year, month, week, 24 hours, or hour—to narrow a search to a period. These controls can help uncover candidates, but votes and comment volume do not establish truth or lasting importance. See Reddit Help’s search features guide.
Rank #4
Search inside a known thread
On desktop, Reddit Help says to use the search bar below the comment box; in the native app, use the search icon on the post. Searching a phrase can take you to a relevant comment branch without expanding every reply. Reddit’s help documentation describes searchable content including posts, communities, comments, media, and people; searching within a community can narrow results to its discussions. See Reddit Help’s instructions for searching within a post and Reddit Help’s search guidance.
Use nominations as a starting point, then read the thread
AskReddit recommendations are evidence of what some Reddit users remember, not independent confirmation of the stories they nominate. Open the original post when available, read enough of the surrounding exchange to understand the joke or reveal, and notice whether later updates change the account. If the original is inaccessible or its context cannot be established, describe the item as a recollection rather than a confirmed event.

Why comment search became part of Reddit discovery
Reddit Inc. announced comment search in April 2022. The company reported that Reddit search-function use grew 20% from Q4 2021 to Q1 2022; that is a historical company figure about search overall, not a current usage measure or a statistic specific to comment search. The announcement is available at Reddit’s 2022 search announcement.
