If your Raspberry Pi YouTube stream stopped starting after a stream key change, copy the current key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, replace the saved key in the configuration your encoder actually uses, save it, and restart the encoder. YouTube’s own guidance recommends updating the encoder with the current key when it reports a startup error. If the stream still will not start, check the stream URL and protocol, encoder health, broadcast settings, and channel permissions.
Update the stream key on the Raspberry Pi
- Copy the current key. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, select Stream, and copy the currently displayed stream key. YouTube directs creators with an encoder startup error to get the current key there and update the encoder (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).
- Replace the key in the active encoder configuration. Update the value used by the running Raspberry Pi stream process, whether it is stored in an encoder setting, configuration file, service, or script. The exact location depends on the encoder and project; do not assume a particular file path or command.
- Save and restart the encoder. Confirm the new value was saved in the configuration actually used by the process, then restart that process and check the incoming stream in Live Control Room.
Treat the key like a password: YouTube says it identifies where the encoder sends the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Do not expose a real key in screenshots, public logs, or a public code repository (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).
If replacing the key does not work
Verify the URL and protocol
A correct key paired with the wrong ingest URL or protocol can still prevent a connection. If your setup uses RTMPS, copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, pair it with the current key, and check that your encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube notes that the interface may show ordinary RTMP by default; confirm that the selected URL and protocol match your encoder (YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS).
Check encoder health and the outbound connection
If the key and URL are correct, follow YouTube’s encoder checks: update the encoder software, inspect the stream in the encoder, review its error messages and CPU load, and test the outbound connection. On a Raspberry Pi, CPU load is one diagnostic, not proof on its own that the board is underpowered. If the encoder reports a local startup or configuration error, focus first on the saved key and URL; if its output looks healthy but the incoming stream is unstable, investigate the network connection (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check broadcast settings and permissions when relevant
For a scheduled broadcast, inspect the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings: these determine whether the encoder can start or stop the stream, and may be carried over when settings are reused (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings). These settings are separate from the encoder’s key.
Channel permissions are another possible issue, not an automatic consequence of changing a key. Google’s Live Streaming API documents liveStreamingNotEnabled and livePermissionBlocked as permission-related errors. If you see a corresponding error, investigate the channel’s live-streaming access rather than repeatedly replacing the key (Google for Developers: YouTube Live Streaming API errors).

Use the error to narrow down the cause
- The encoder fails locally at startup: verify that the current key was saved to the configuration the process loads, and that the ingest URL and protocol are correct.
- The encoder connects, but the broadcast does not start: check the scheduled stream’s start controls and any channel permission error.
- The encoder appears healthy, but the incoming stream is unstable: test the outbound network connection and review the encoder’s errors and CPU load.
After each change, start the encoder and check Live Control Room’s incoming-stream status so you can distinguish a local configuration problem from a broadcast or connection problem.
