For playing a YouTube Live stream on a TV around the clock, a supported Android TV or Google TV device is usually the simpler choice. A Raspberry Pi offers more configuration control, but you must choose and maintain its operating system, browser or player, startup behavior, and recovery setup. Neither option is proven by the available sources to guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 playback. Test the exact device and stream before relying on it unattended.

For a supported device check, use YouTube’s supported devices information. It names selected Android TV televisions and NVIDIA Shield; confirm your exact model rather than relying on the generic “Android TV box” label.
What to check before leaving either device on
Network and stream stability
YouTube Help recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. That is guidance, not a guarantee of stable playback: the stream’s resolution and bitrate, household traffic, Wi-Fi interference, and congestion all affect results. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connection and app or device software, then reopening or restarting the app or device when needed. A YouTube Help discussion of live playback delay explains that a smaller buffer can make interruptions more likely and recommends the “Default” delay setting to minimize interruptions in the YouTube TV/Primetime context. That advice is not a setting available on every YouTube Live stream or device.
Idle, screensaver, and energy settings
Android TV developer guidance says Ambient Mode is entered after 10 minutes of user inactivity, with Energy Saver following after a further period determined by the device’s Energy Saver setting. Media apps may prevent Ambient Mode during active video playback, but the guidance says an app should not suppress it when playback is stopped or paused. Setting up a Raspberry Pi for playback
Choose compatible hardware and power
Match the power supply to the board rather than assuming one Pi’s requirements apply to another. Raspberry Pi’s current setup documentation specifies 5 V at 5 A and a 27 W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 5, and 5 V at 3 A for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. Its getting-started guidance recommends a microSD card of at least 32 GB. Check the current requirements for your exact model in the Raspberry Pi setup documentation and power-supply guidance.
Choose and test the playback path
Raspberry Pi OS documentation says VLC is preinstalled on the full OS, uses hardware acceleration, and supports popular audio and video formats. It documents command-line playback and a GUI-free cvlc route; Raspberry Pi OS Lite requires VLC packages to be installed separately. Historical engineer comments from October 2023 describe Pi 5 playback of 1080p60 in one test and note that 4K YouTube browser playback depends on codec and browser overhead. Those observations are not current benchmarks or guarantees for your board, browser, stream, or unattended operation. Test the exact playback path and quality you intend to use.
Configure startup and recovery
- Install the OS on the microSD card and connect the Pi to the intended screen and network.
- Choose the browser or player that actually plays your YouTube Live stream at the required quality. Confirm whether it can launch full-screen and resume after a restart.
- Set the screen and power behavior for your deployment, and determine what happens if playback pauses, the network drops, or the device reboots.
- Run a real-world trial on the target network and display. Include idle behavior, a network interruption, and a device restart; no particular trial length establishes 24/7 reliability.
Setting up an Android TV or Google TV box
- Identify the exact brand and model. Check it against YouTube’s supported-device information; do not infer app support from the product category alone.
- Install or open YouTube, find the intended live stream, and test it at the resolution you plan to leave playing.
- Review the device’s screensaver, Ambient Mode, Energy Saver, and related idle settings. Check what happens during active playback, a pause, and a stalled stream.
- Test the whole setup on its intended network and screen, including recovery after a connection interruption and a power or device restart.

Compare the exact device and accessories you need: a Pi requires model-matched power and storage, while an Android TV box requires a suitable power adapter, HDMI connection, and network. Consider an Ethernet cable or network upgrade only if connection problems point to Wi-Fi or congestion; it is not a guaranteed cure.
