You can stream a live camera or other video source from a Raspberry Pi 5 to YouTube, but the right parts and internet connection depend on your chosen resolution, frame rate, and capture setup. Start with a Pi 5, a suitable USB-C power supply, a microSD card, a compatible video source, and an upload connection that can reliably carry YouTube’s recommended bitrate. Test at the place and time you plan to stream; there is no universal ISP plan or speed recommendation for all of India.
Parts you need for a Raspberry Pi 5 YouTube stream
- Raspberry Pi 5: Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance lists 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB RAM variants. It does not specify a required tier for live streaming, so choose based on the operating system and other applications you plan to run.
- USB-C power supply: Raspberry Pi says Pi 5 needs at least 3.0 A and recommends its official USB-C power supply. This is a manufacturer setup baseline, not a guarantee that every combination of peripherals will be adequately powered.
- microSD card: Raspberry Pi’s setup guide specifies at least 32 GB for the operating system and files. It does not compare card speed or endurance for this use.
- Video source: Choose a Raspberry Pi Camera Module, USB camera, capture device, or another source compatible with your intended capture software. The right choice depends on the connector, software path, resolution, frame rate, and audio needs; no single camera model is required for every build.
- Network connection: Wi-Fi or Ethernet can connect the Pi to your network. An Ethernet cable is optional, but a wired local connection cannot increase your ISP’s upstream capacity or prevent service interruptions.
- Optional case: A case can protect the board from damage or short circuits if it is placed on a metal surface. Raspberry Pi’s guidance does not establish a particular case as a cooling solution.
- Setup peripherals: For desktop setup, have a display and input devices available. A headless setup requires another computer and a network connection.
Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance covers setup, while its setup guide lists the power, storage, and model details above.
Choose a resolution and calculate upload needs
YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates provide a practical starting point. These are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that an internet plan will sustain the stream or that viewers will receive a particular quality.
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
Plan for upload headroom above the selected video bitrate: audio and bitrate variation also use capacity. YouTube does not prescribe a universal minimum internet plan for Indian users. Run a speed test from the Pi’s actual location, preferably at the time of day you expect to stream, then verify the choice with a real test stream.

Start conservatively if upload is uncertain
If performance varies or you have not measured the connection under realistic conditions, begin with a lower profile such as 720p30. Move to 1080p30 only after tests show the upload can sustain it. Choose a higher frame rate or resolution only when the extra motion detail matters and your connection and Pi setup handle it reliably.
Configure YouTube encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists CBR and supports H.264, H.265, or AV1; the table above gives selected H.264 values. Set a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps.

In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and use its stream key in your encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. The exact menus may vary as YouTube updates Studio.
Raspberry Pi’s camera software documentation describes a capture and encoding path, including a low-latency option with a coding-efficiency trade-off. Its streaming documentation shows a software x264enc pipeline for Pi 5. Those examples do not establish performance for every combination of camera, resolution, frame rate, cooling, and software. The Pi 5 launch announcement’s 4Kp60 HEVC decoder specification describes decoding, not the ability to encode and send a 4K live stream. Validate the exact workload rather than assuming a given output profile will run smoothly.

Set up and test before the event
- Prepare the Pi: Install and configure the operating system on a microSD card of at least 32 GB. Complete the initial setup with a display and input peripherals, or configure it headlessly using another computer and a network connection.
- Connect and verify your source: Attach the camera, capture device, or other input. Confirm that the chosen capture software can see the video and audio you intend to broadcast.
- Connect to the network: Use Wi-Fi or, if practical, Ethernet. Check that the Pi has internet access and measure upload at its intended location.
- Create the YouTube stream: In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream, copy its stream key, and enter it in your encoder. Select RTMPS where available.
- Set and test the encoder: Choose a resolution and frame rate supported by your source and measured connection. Use CBR, the matching YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate if using H.264, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and stereo AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps if that matches your audio setup.
- Run a realistic test: Include representative audio and movement, watch YouTube’s stream-health information, and check for interruptions or quality warnings. YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast.
- Check rights and channel rules: Use video and audio you have permission to broadcast. Copyrighted material can lead to claims or interruptions; livestreaming prerecorded material does not remove copyright obligations. Follow YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization policies, including its rules on reused content where monetization is relevant.
Wi-Fi or Ethernet in India?
Choose the connection that is more stable at the Pi’s actual placement. Ethernet can simplify the connection between the board and router; Wi-Fi may be more practical where cabling is difficult. Neither option fixes inadequate ISP upload or outages beyond your local network. Indian connection performance varies by location, plan, time, and network conditions, so do not choose an ISP or plan from a country-wide bitrate rule: test your own upstream connection and then conduct a full stream test.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate: Lower the resolution, frame rate, or encoder bitrate, and retest. Check upload at the Pi’s location and look for other devices using the connection.
- The stream starts but drops: Check for local Wi-Fi instability, router or ISP interruptions, and power problems. Try Ethernet if available, verify the power supply against Raspberry Pi’s baseline, and run a longer test.
- Video is choppy or the Pi cannot keep up: Reduce the workload and retest the exact camera and encoder combination. Do not infer outgoing encoding capability from the Pi 5’s video-decoding specification.
- No video or audio reaches the encoder: Confirm the input is connected and recognized by the selected capture software; check the encoder’s chosen source and audio input.
- YouTube cannot connect: Confirm internet access, RTMPS/server settings, and that the stream key is current and copied correctly. Replace an exposed key in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Power-related restarts or peripheral issues: Check connections and use a supply meeting the 3.0 A manufacturer baseline. Additional peripherals can affect power needs, so the baseline alone does not guarantee every setup.
