What was Raquel Welch’s cause of death?
The Los Angeles Times and TMZ reported that the certificate listed cardiac arrest as the immediate cause and Alzheimer’s disease as an underlying cause. The Times said Welch died at her Los Angeles home at 2:25 a.m.
These details are attributed to the outlets’ accounts of the document. The Times reported that TMZ obtained and posted it online; TMZ said it obtained the certificate.
What do “immediate cause” and “underlying cause” mean?
They describe different parts of a sequence: an immediate cause is the event or condition at the end of the fatal sequence, while an underlying cause is the disease or injury that began it. UK government guidance explains this general distinction, but its certification rules apply to England and Wales, not Welch’s California record. The guidance describes cardiac arrest as a terminal event or mode of dying, rather than an acceptable sole cause in that system; that does not establish whether or how the California certificate complied with local rules.

The reports do not describe a specific medical mechanism connecting Alzheimer’s disease to the cardiac arrest, so it would be misleading to infer one from the reported wording alone. The UK guidance is available from the Department of Health and Social Care.

When Welch died, her team described her death as following a “brief illness,” the Los Angeles Times reported. Entertainment Tonight also quoted her representative, Steve Sauer, using that phrase in its April 4, 2023, report.

The later certificate reporting added details not included in that initial description. The Times said Welch had not publicly disclosed Alzheimer’s during her lifetime; the report did not establish when the disease began.
