A feud, a period of silence, or the absence of a released song is not the same as a direct refusal. The examples below show what is documented—and where the evidence stops.
What counts as refusing to work together?
A direct refusal requires an artist to say they will not collaborate with a particular person. That is different from not speaking for a time, exchanging diss tracks, or simply having no released song together. Those distinctions matter: public conflict can change, and a missing collaboration does not prove that either artist rejected one.
The examples here are therefore best read as documented rivalries and strained relationships, not as a definitive roster of permanent refusals. The strongest evidence is dated and specific: a released track, an interview, or a reported change of position.
Drake and Kendrick Lamar: collaborators before the feud
Before the public tension
Drake and Kendrick Lamar had worked together before their rivalry became a major public story. The Associated Press identifies Lamar’s appearance on Drake’s “Buried Alive Interlude” in 2011 and Drake’s appearance on Lamar’s “Poetic Justice” in 2012. Both also appeared on A$AP Rocky’s “(Expletive) ’ Problems” in 2012; that is Rocky’s track, not a Drake or Lamar collaboration of their own.

From competitive call-outs to a later feud
In 2013, Lamar’s verse on Big Sean’s “Control” named Drake and other contemporary rappers. The Associated Press describes the verse as competitive provocation and recounts Drake’s response in a Billboard cover story, followed by Lamar taking another jab at the BET Hip-Hop Awards. That history shows tension, but it does not establish that either artist announced a permanent ban on working with the other.
Their rivalry escalated again in 2024 through a series of diss tracks. The Associated Press’s timeline of the feud describes the releases and cautions that diss records can contain exaggerations or unsupported claims. Accusations in lyrics should be treated as claims by the artist who made them, not as established facts.

J. Cole: a diss track, then a retreat
J. Cole’s brief involvement in the 2024 Drake–Kendrick conflict illustrates why a public diss does not automatically become a lasting refusal to collaborate. Cole released “7 Minute Drill” in April 2024, criticizing Lamar’s albums, then apologized and withdrew from the exchange at Dreamville Festival. The Washington Post reported that Cole said the track did not sit right with his spirit. His reversal is evidence of a changed public position, not a permanent work ban.
Drake and Nicki Minaj: a dated period of silence
In a 2016 interview with Zane Lowe, Drake said he and Nicki Minaj had not spoken, while expressing respect for her and their history: “I always have respect for Nicki but unfortunately we haven’t spoken.” The remark establishes what Drake said about their relationship at that time; it does not establish their present-day relationship or a refusal to collaborate. The interview was released by Apple in 2016.

Nicki Minaj and Cardi B: why “MotorSport” is not proof of refusal
Nicki Minaj’s 2018 account of Migos’ “MotorSport” complicates the idea that a missing or disputed collaboration proves an artist refused to work with someone. Minaj said she agreed to Cardi B’s inclusion on the track. She attributed her own absence from the video to a scheduling conflict and said she was hurt by the public conversation that followed.
In the same interview, Minaj said she had tried to discourage Meek Mill from pursuing his feud with Drake and described wishing the conflict would not happen: “It was difficult to stay out of it. I was behind the scenes, wishing it wouldn’t happen.” She also said Meek and Drake had moved on by then. These are Minaj’s statements in a 2018 interview, not proof of a current relationship among the artists. BBC News reported her comments in 2018.

Why rap rivalries can make collaboration harder
Jay-Z offered a perspective on the costs of battle culture in a 2026 interview with Frazier Tharpe. He said he valued the excitement and sparring but worried about the consequences of social-media alignment and personal attacks: “We love the excitement and I love the sparring, but in this day and age there’s so much negative stuff that comes with it that you almost wish it didn’t happen.” That is Jay-Z’s view, not a universal verdict on rap feuds or evidence that any particular artist has refused a collaboration. GQ published the interview in 2026.

How to read claims that rappers refuse to collaborate
- Look for a direct statement. A clear, attributed refusal is stronger evidence than fan inference or the absence of a song.
- Check the date. An interview about a relationship in 2016 or 2018 does not settle what the artists think or do now.
- Separate conflict from a work ban. Diss tracks, public tension, and periods without contact show friction, not necessarily a permanent decision.
- Notice later changes. An apology or a statement that people have moved on can alter the story, as Cole’s retreat and Minaj’s account of Drake and Meek Mill illustrate.
- Treat lyrical allegations carefully. As the Associated Press notes, diss tracks may include exaggerations or unsubstantiated rumors.
