Randy Moss said in December 2024 that doctors found a cancerous mass in his bile duct, between his pancreas and liver. He later completed treatment at Levine Cancer in Charlotte. In a 2026 interview, Moss said his disease was in remission, described his health as great, and said he continued to have scans and checkups; that is a dated update, not a guarantee of his current medical status.
What Randy Moss disclosed about his diagnosis
On December 13, 2024, Moss publicly shared that he had bile duct cancer. In his account, a cancerous mass was found in the bile duct between his pancreas and liver. He said he had a stent placed in his liver around Thanksgiving and underwent a six-hour operation to remove the cancer about a week before the announcement. The Associated Press report published by ESPN identified the operation as a Whipple procedure. ESPN / Associated Press, December 13, 2024
Moss stepped away from ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown to receive treatment, according to that contemporaneous report. It did not identify a specific microscopic subtype or establish whether the tumor was intrahepatic, perihilar, or distal.
How Moss’s treatment and public updates unfolded
- Thanksgiving 2024: Moss said he had a stent placed in his liver.
- About a week before December 13, 2024: He said he underwent a six-hour operation to remove the cancer; the AP account described it as a Whipple procedure.
- February 2025: ESPN reported that he would return to the Sunday NFL Countdown set for Super Bowl LIX after his hiatus.
- September 2025: Atrium Health said Moss had completed treatment at Levine Cancer in Charlotte. Its post included his thanks to the care team after he rang the bell on his last day of treatment. Atrium Health, September 2025
- 2026 interview: An Associated Press interview carried by NFL.com said the disease was in remission, treatment had ended the previous fall, and Moss had resumed his ESPN analyst role for the 2025 season. He said, “I had to take a year off to be able to get myself back right, but my health is great.” He also said he continued to have scans and checkups. Associated Press via NFL.com, 2026
These are separate updates: Atrium Health reported treatment completion in 2025, while the later AP interview described remission and Moss’s health in his own words. Neither should be read as a real-time medical assessment beyond its publication date.

What bile duct cancer means
Bile duct cancer, also called cholangiocarcinoma, begins in a duct that carries bile from the liver and gallbladder to the small intestine. The disease is classified by where it starts: intrahepatic tumors arise within the liver, while extrahepatic tumors arise outside it. Extrahepatic cancers include perihilar and distal tumors. These categories explain the terminology but do not establish which location or microscopic subtype Moss had. American Cancer Society, revised October 11, 2024
What a Whipple procedure involves
A Whipple procedure, or pancreaticoduodenectomy, can be used for some distal bile duct cancers. The National Cancer Institute describes it as surgery to remove the head of the pancreas, gallbladder, part of the stomach, part of the small intestine, and bile duct. Moss’s public account was summarized as a Whipple procedure, but the available reports do not establish his exact surgical pathology or provide a basis for inferring additional details about his operation. Why his treatment cannot be generalized to every patient
Bile duct cancer treatment depends on whether the tumor can be fully removed and on the individual’s circumstances. The National Cancer Institute lists surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, biliary stenting or drainage, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and clinical trials among possible approaches. This general overview is not a description of every part of Moss’s care or a treatment recommendation for another person.
