Rama Navami was observed on Wednesday, 17 April 2024. The Ministry of Tourism’s event listing gives that date, as does the Uttar Pradesh Department of Religious Affairs for Ram Janmotsav at Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Temple.
Rama Navami follows the lunar calendar, so its Gregorian date changes from year to year. It falls on the ninth day of Chaitra Navaratri, the Hindu festival period observed in the month of Chaitra. What does Rama Navami commemorate?
Rama Navami commemorates the birth or appearance of Lord Rama according to Hindu religious tradition. In a greeting issued on 16 April 2024, President Droupadi Murmu described it as “the auspicious occasion of the birth of Lord Shri Ram.” Her message also characterized Rama Navami as an occasion that “guides us on the path of truth and righteousness.” These are devotional and ethical meanings expressed in the President’s greeting, rather than claims of independently established history. How was Rama Navami observed?
Observances differ among communities and temples; there is no single schedule that describes every celebration. The Ministry of Tourism lists Shobha Yatra (a devotional procession), bhajan kirtan (devotional singing), fairs, and Ramayana katha (storytelling from the Ramayana) among activities associated with the festival.
Examples of temple schedules in 2024
Official notices illustrate how individual institutions set their own programs. The Uttar Pradesh Department of Religious Affairs listed Ram Janmotsav at Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Temple in Ayodhya on 17 April. Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams announced an Asthanam and procession at Srivari Temple on 17 April, followed by Rama Pattabhishekam on 18 April. The 2024 system used four mirrors and two lenses to guide sunlight to the idol. The ministry estimated that the light spot could remain for about six minutes. It also said the mechanism was designed to accommodate a one- to two-day shift in the festival date; that figure describes the system’s design tolerance, not the festival’s date range. The effect depended on direct sunlight and would not work in cloud or rain. The first mirror also required annual manual adjustment, so the 2024 setup should not be treated as a guarantee that the effect will occur in the same way every year.
