In “The Rainbow Batman,” a story in Detective Comics #241, Robin injures his arm while saving a woman. Batman changes into conspicuous outfits to draw attention away from his injured partner and keep criminals from connecting Robin’s injury to Dick Grayson.
Why did Batman wear different colored suits?
Robin hurts his arm saving a woman from a getaway car. Because he has seen the thieves, he still needs to help Batman find them, but his injury could reveal that Dick Grayson is Robin. Batman responds by wearing a succession of brightly colored costumes, giving Gotham—and the criminals—something else to notice.
The changing outfits are a distraction, not a permanent change of identity. DC.com writer Rosie Knight describes the plan as a way “to protect the winged Boy Wonder” by keeping the “nefarious do-badders” from focusing on Batman’s young partner. That is Knight’s editorial description, not dialogue from the comic. DC’s retrospective on Batman’s wildest costumes presents the joke and the protective motive together.

What the colorful costume does—and does not—mean
The bright suits make Batman the spectacle so Robin’s injury attracts less scrutiny. They do not establish a new lasting persona or a separate identity for Batman. The story’s stated purpose is practical: protecting Robin and his secret identity while he recovers enough to help with the case. The title’s “brightest hero” language is a playful description of the costumes, not a claim that Batman becomes a different hero.
