Selected from more than 30,000 applicants, she made her film debut as Maria in the 2021 movie. Her career since has moved across major film roles, Broadway and London’s West End—with recognition and public scrutiny along the way, rather than one simple, uninterrupted rise.
How Rachel Zegler got her start
In January 2018, Steven Spielberg’s team put out an open casting call for West Side Story. Zegler, then 16, answered by submitting videos of herself singing “Tonight” and “I Feel Pretty.” Broadway Direct reports that she was chosen as Maria from more than 30,000 applicants. In a 2021 TIME interview, Zegler said, “I had actually auditioned for about a year.”
The part became her film debut. Spielberg’s adaptation was released in 2021, introducing Zegler to a wide audience through a demanding lead role in a classic musical. She later recalled the production warmly in a D23 interview: “Working with Steven as a director, it was a dream.”
Why West Side Story mattered to her
Zegler has spoken about the casting and creative process in terms of representation, not only career opportunity. In TIME’s 2021 interview, she said, “We need to be in the room,” arguing for Latino participation in the decisions that shape films. She described her family background: her parents were born in the United States, and her grandmother came from Colombia in the 1960s. Zegler also described herself as a white Latina and said she was considered more palatable to audiences—an observation about how representation and colorism can shape whose stories are accepted.

The same TIME article cited 2019 UCLA diversity figures: actors of color held 4.6% of movie acting roles, while people of color received 2.8% of writing credits and 2.7% of directing credits among the 145 top-grossing films that year. These figures describe 2019, as reported by TIME in 2021; they should not be read as current industry statistics.
Film roles after her debut
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes
In 2023, Zegler played Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, a major role in a well-known film franchise. The part also drew on her musical performance skills, while placing her in a story and screen world distinct from West Side Story.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Also in 2023, she appeared in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, adding a superhero film to a screen career that had begun with a musical drama.
Snow White
In 2025, Zegler starred in Disney’s live-action Snow White. In a D23 interview published March 13, 2025, she recalled making the film: “We had the most incredible time making this movie. It was so magical.”

The film also brought unusually visible public scrutiny. In its October 2025 interview with Zegler, Glamour UK described criticism surrounding Snow White and reported her perspective on it. Zegler said, “It rolls right off my back these days.” That is her account of handling criticism; it does not establish that any particular controversy caused a particular box-office result.
From Broadway to the West End
Romeo + Juliet on Broadway
Zegler made her Broadway debut in 2024, playing Juliet in Romeo + Juliet. Moving from film sets to a live theatre production brought her career into a different medium, where performance unfolds in front of an audience each night.
Evita in London
In summer 2025, she made her West End debut as Eva Perón in Jamie Lloyd’s production of Evita. Broadway Direct reports that she received the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for the role. The same publication’s September 24, 2026 retrospective listed a Broadway transfer for 2027 with Zegler reprising the part; that is a future schedule, so dates and casting may change.

A career shaped by more than a breakthrough
Zegler’s early path—from online singing videos to a lead role in a Spielberg film—was unusually swift in public view, but the work that followed has not been confined to a single lane. Film musicals, a franchise prequel, a superhero movie and live theatre have each placed her in a different kind of role. Her own comments on Latino representation and public criticism add context to the career story: they show how she has framed both the opportunity of being cast and the attention that followed.
