Those performances helped make her a familiar screen presence, but her career began in childhood and has also included modeling, music, and roles across a wide range of genres.
How Jovovich’s screen career began
Jovovich entered film as a child. The amfAR biography says her film career began at age nine, when she took the lead role in Disney’s Night Train to Kathmandu. Her early screen credits also include Two Moon Junction, Return to the Blue Lagoon, Charlie Chaplin’s Chaplin, and Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused. amfAR’s biography and her official filmography document the early work.
Modeling became another part of her public profile. amfAR says she appeared on the covers of The Face and Lei at age eleven. It describes her career as spanning acting, modeling, songwriting and spokesperson work—not simply a succession of film roles.
Leeloo brought international recognition
In Luc Besson’s science-fiction film The Fifth Element (1997), Jovovich played Leeloo, a mysterious figure whose importance to the story grows alongside her understanding of humanity. The role paired her with Bruce Willis and gave audiences a sharply distinctive character: a striking screen presence, a memorable look, and a performance that moved between physical comedy, vulnerability and action.

- All six Resident Evil movies, now together in one collection! Based on the popular video game series and starring Milla Jovovich, these sci-fi thrillers are must-watch genre classics!
amfAR credits the film with bringing Jovovich international acclaim and describes Leeloo as a cult-favorite role. GQ revisited Leeloo as one of the actor’s iconic characters in a 2025 feature, a sign of the part’s lasting place in how her screen career is remembered. amfAR’s career biography and GQ’s 2025 feature both foreground the role.
Alice turned a signature role into a long-running franchise
Jovovich began playing Alice in Resident Evil (2002), adapting the video-game property into an action-horror film series. Unlike Leeloo, a defining character in one movie, Alice remained the central figure across multiple installments. Jovovich’s official filmography lists six films featuring her as Alice:
- Resident Evil
- Resident Evil: Apocalypse
- Resident Evil: Extinction
- Resident Evil: Afterlife
- Resident Evil: Retribution
- Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
amfAR identifies the leading role as a major source of the franchise’s success. The six-film figure here is a count of Alice entries in Jovovich’s official filmography, not a published industry measure of her overall career. The series gave her room to carry a recurring action lead while connecting her name with a recognizable franchise over many years.
How the two roles shaped her public image
| Role | What it is | Career significance |
|---|---|---|
| Leeloo in The Fifth Element (1997) | A distinctive science-fiction character in a single film | amfAR connects the role with international acclaim; later coverage continues to identify Leeloo as iconic. |
| Alice in the Resident Evil films (beginning 2002) | The continuing lead of an action-horror franchise | amfAR links the role to franchise success; Jovovich’s official filmography lists six Alice films. |
Together, the roles explain much of Jovovich’s screen identity without accounting for all of her work. Leeloo established a memorable science-fiction touchstone; Alice extended her association with action and horror through a continuing series. Neither role alone defines the breadth of her career.

Beyond science fiction and action horror
Jovovich’s other credits show her moving among historical drama, comedy, action, horror and independent projects. She played Joan of Arc in The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999), appeared in the comedy Zoolander (2001), and took the lead in the science-fiction action film Ultraviolet (2006). Later credits include The Three Musketeers (2011), Hellboy (2019), and the independent fantasy film Paradise Hills (2019).
Her more recent filmography includes Breathe (2024) and In the Lost Lands (2025). These credits demonstrate that her work continued beyond the two roles most often associated with her, though a filmography alone does not establish how a title was received. The official page also lists Worldbreaker and Protector for 2026 and labels them upcoming; their release timing and status may change. See the official filmography for its current listings.

Music was another part of her career
Jovovich’s work outside acting also includes music. amfAR identifies her as a singer and songwriter, while her official site lists her 1994 album, The Divine Comedy. Music is a smaller thread in her public career than her best-known film roles, but it is part of the broader creative path she pursued from a young age. Her official music page lists the album.
What “successful” means in this career profile
Jovovich’s career can be described as successful in terms of sustained visibility, memorable roles and a prominent place in a long-running film franchise. The available sources do not provide a consistent box-office dataset, award tally or other defined measure that would support a precise ranking of her success. Her significance is clearer in the roles audiences continue to associate with her, the years she led the Resident Evil series, and the range of credits beyond it.
