Her family’s obituary and contemporaneous reporting identified her cancer as fibrolamellar carcinoma, a rare form of liver cancer.
Who was Rachel Yaffe?
Yaffe was from Lutherville, Maryland. The Sol Levinson & Bros. Funeral Home memorial gives her dates as November 11, 1996, to October 11, 2024. The Baltimore Banner reports that she grew up in the Baltimore suburbs, attended St. Paul’s School for Girls, graduated in 2015, and played lacrosse during her freshman year at George Washington University.
On TikTok and Instagram, she shared food, wellness, daily life, and her experience with cancer. Although she had been diagnosed years earlier, she began discussing the illness publicly in 2023. “I get to shift the stereotype around cancer,” she said, as quoted by the Banner. She also spoke about allowing difficult feelings to surface, saying it was important to “really let the emotions be felt and expressed.”
What cancer did Rachel Yaffe have?
Yaffe publicly identified her illness as fibrolamellar carcinoma, also called fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma. The Independent reported details from her account: an ultrasound found a large liver tumor, and a biopsy showed it was malignant. She said the tumor measured 20 centimeters, and that the cancer recurred in her liver and lungs three months after surgery. Those details come from her public account as relayed in reporting, not independently reviewed medical records.

What is fibrolamellar carcinoma?
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) describes fibrolamellar carcinoma, or FLC, as a rare liver cancer that usually develops in teenagers and adults under 40 and occurs in people with healthy livers. That general description is not a complete account of Yaffe’s individual medical history.
- The NCI estimates FLC accounts for 1% to 5% of all liver cancers (NCI, 2019).
- The NCI estimates it occurs in about one in five million people in the US (NCI, 2019). The institute notes that the cancer is so rare that available data are limited.
According to the NCI, diagnosis may involve imaging and biopsy. Surgery may be used to remove as much of the cancer as possible; chemotherapy may be used when surgery is not possible or when the cancer has spread. These are general descriptions of care, not treatment recommendations or a complete description of the care Yaffe received. See the NCI’s FLC overview for more information.

How did people remember her?
The Banner reported that then-Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, a family friend, called Yaffe an “inspiration” to people around her and told the team about her death before a game. Her sister Jessica “Jessie” Yaffe wrote, “I am beyond lucky to have a sister who touched the hearts of so many different people, in ways that I’ll never be able to fully comprehend.”
Yaffe shared wellness routines and a positive outlook alongside traditional treatment. Those were part of her personal story; they are not evidence that a lifestyle practice can treat or cure cancer.
