R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead is a teen-oriented Halloween horror film, not an all-ages family movie. Its missing-brother mystery and seasonal scarecrow menace offer an accessible entry point to horror, but broad comedy and a surprisingly dark ending complicate the “all treats” appeal.
What is R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead about?
Sam has just moved with his family to Redhaven when his brother Finn disappears. The more disturbing turn is that the adults, including Sam’s mother, seem to forget Finn ever existed. Sam, Becka, and Rusty try to uncover the harvest curse behind the disappearance before Finn is lost for good. That spoiler-light setup gives the film a strong, unsettling hook without requiring a complicated mythology.
Tubi describes the movie as inspired by an R.L. Stine story from The Haunting Hour; Common Sense Media identifies the source story as appearing in Stine’s anthology Nightmare Hour. “Inspired by” is the useful distinction: Jem Garrard is credited as the film’s writer and director, not Stine. This is also a separate film from the 1988 movie Pumpkinhead; the available sources do not establish a connection between them.
Is Tubi’s Pumpkinhead family-friendly?
Only with an age qualification. Tubi labels the film TV-14 and says that rating may make it unsuitable for children under 14. Common Sense Media recommends it for ages 14 and up. Those assessments make it a possible choice for horror-curious teenagers, not a safe default for younger children or a low-scare family viewing night.

Common Sense Media flags frequent jump scares, slasher-style chases, a threatening scarecrow, and children trapped or endangered. There are threats involving weapons, some insults, and a mention of drunkenness. One scene includes a dead teen’s head rolling along the ground, though the guide does not describe it as bloody. The ending is unhappy and may upset younger viewers. Parents should weigh that emotional finish as well as the scare count.
How scary is it, and who is it for?
The film sits in a narrow gateway-horror lane. Common Sense Media’s view is that it may be too mild for established horror fans yet too frightening for viewers just beginning with the genre, while still recommending it for teens interested in slasher thrills. Bloody Disgusting critic Joe Lipsett likewise frames it as gateway horror for tweens. These are critical judgments, not a guarantee that every young viewer will react the same way.

That makes the best audience a teenager who already enjoys spooky seasonal stories and can handle frequent peril. The premise does a lot of the work: a missing sibling whom everyone else has forgotten is an unnerving idea even before the curse and scarecrow arrive. For adults looking for sustained dread or a more elaborate horror story, the film may feel slight.
What works—and what keeps it from being a bigger treat?
The hook and Halloween atmosphere
Redhaven, the harvest curse, and the menacing scarecrow give the story an immediate autumnal identity. Its central mystery is easy to grasp, and the missing-brother premise gives Sam a clear personal reason to keep investigating. Bloody Disgusting notes a striking titular spectacle and two animated sequences among the film’s memorable touches.

The quick, broad approach
Lipsett describes the plotting as fast and straightforward, with broad comedy and a simple, inexpensive quality. That directness can suit a young audience: the movie gets to its scares without a dense backstory. But the same choices can blunt the tension. Broad jokes sit alongside slasher-style peril, and a basic plot leaves less room for surprise than the unsettling premise initially promises.
The ending changes the flavor
The coda is notably dark, according to Lipsett, and Common Sense Media specifically warns that the ending is not happy. That tonal shift is part of the film’s effect, but it also undercuts a purely playful “family-friendly” reading. Viewers choosing it for children should know that the finish is not simply a reassuring Halloween wrap-up.
