Quincy Jones, the musician, composer, arranger, conductor and producer whose work helped define modern popular music, died on November 3, 2024, at 91. The Associated Press reported that he died at his Bel Air home surrounded by family. His partnership with Michael Jackson produced Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad, but those albums represent only one part of a career spanning jazz, pop, film and television.
A family announcement and a life celebrated
Jones’s family announced his death in a statement quoted by the Associated Press: “Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing.” The statement added, “And although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him.”
That description fits a career that moved easily between performance, composition, arranging, conducting, recording and executive work. Institutional biographies from the Recording Academy and the National Endowment for the Arts portray Jones not simply as a record producer, but as a broad musical force whose responsibilities changed with the project.
Why Thriller is central—but not the whole story
Jones produced Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad, the three collaborations identified in the Recording Academy’s remembrance. Thriller became the defining public shorthand for their partnership, yet the sequence shows a longer creative relationship: from the dance-floor sophistication of Off the Wall, through Thriller’s extraordinary scale, to the harder-edged pop of Bad.

Jones’s role was also more than selecting songs or overseeing sessions. In a 2016 Library of Congress interview quoted by the AP, he explained the responsibility this way: “If an album doesn’t do well, everyone says ‘it was the producers fault’; so if it does well, it should be your ‘fault,’ too.” He continued: “The tracks don’t just all of a sudden appear. The producer has to have the skill, experience and ability to guide the vision to completion.”
A career across jazz, pop, screen and business
Before and beyond Jackson, Jones worked as a bandleader, trumpeter, composer, arranger, conductor, record producer and record-label executive. His career crossed jazz and popular music as well as film and television, making him a connective figure between performance, studio craft and the screen.

The National Endowment for the Arts also identifies Jones as an activist. That wider description matters: his legacy rests not only on a handful of landmark albums, but on the many ways he helped organize, write, perform and produce music across industries and generations.
Grammy record and institutional recognition
The Recording Academy’s 2024 remembrance reports 28 Grammy wins and 80 nominations for Jones. The National Endowment for the Arts biography reports the same totals. Those figures should be understood as the totals published by those institutions; changing award databases and rankings make broader “most ever” claims unsafe without a current, defined comparison.

What did Quincy Jones die of?
The AP’s initial obituary said that a cause of death had not been disclosed. The Los Angeles Times later reported pancreatic cancer as the cause, citing a death certificate issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The two reports describe different points in the public timeline: the cause was not given in the first announcement and was reported later from the certificate.
