Também esclarece que a aparência do hímen não indica de forma confiável se houve relação sexual e que nenhum exame conhecido pode comprovar um histórico de relação vaginal. Por isso, descrever a cirurgia como uma forma comprovada de “restaurar a virgindade” seria incorreto.

Em declaração conjunta publicada em 2018, a OMS, a ONU Mulheres e o Alto Comissariado das Nações Unidas para os Direitos Humanos informaram que testes de virgindade haviam sido documentados em pelo menos 20 países e defenderam sua eliminação. Esse número se refere à ocorrência desses testes; não diz respeito a Ravena, à himenoplastia ou ao Carnaval.
