Queer Edward II is a 2026 documentary about the making of Derek Jarman’s 1991 film, built largely from footage shot on set by cinematographer Seamus McGarvey. Directed and written by Theo Rollason, it reveals how rehearsals, production pressures and queer-rights activism met around a film that turned Christopher Marlowe’s history play into a contemporary political statement. Rollason also connects that history to present-day opposition to queer rights—but that is the director’s stated interpretation, not a statistical finding.
What is Queer Edward II about?
The 97-minute, English-language UK documentary follows the creation of Jarman’s Edward II through material filmed during production in 1991. The British Film Institute lists the film as directed and written by Theo Rollason. Its official synopsis points to rehearsals, intimate conversations and activity in the production office; a 2026 Sight and Sound review says the documentary draws primarily on more than thirty hours of McGarvey’s Betacam footage, supplemented by other archival material.
That access makes the film more than a retelling of Jarman’s feature or a conventional biography. It shows people working through the practical, interpersonal and political conditions around a production. The archive gives viewers a view of filmmaking as it happened, while placing the film’s creative decisions alongside the activism that surrounded it.
What does the archive reveal about the film’s politics?
Marlowe’s story in Jarman’s present
Jarman adapted Christopher Marlowe’s play about the medieval king Edward II and his male favorite, Piers Gaveston. He used that historical story in a contemporary political register. The BFI review situates the feature amid political efforts to recriminalize homosexuality, unequal ages of consent and the AIDS crisis; Screen describes it in relation to protests against Section 28 and campaigns concerning the age of consent. Those accounts place the film in its period without reducing its politics to a single issue.

Jarman’s personal circumstances were part of that context. The documentary’s official synopsis says he had recently been diagnosed with HIV while making the film. In a 1992 Los Angeles Times interview, Jarman said he was diagnosed in 1986 and went public with his health status in early 1987. He also said, “I get the impression that ‘Edward II’ is much more accessible than my other films.”
Activists in the production
According to the official synopsis, Jarman cast activists from OutRage! as extras. The footage and reviews also describe a moment when activists went to a nearby studio where Cliff Richard was rehearsing. It makes visible how protest and production could intersect, but the episode is not a simple feel-good anecdote: the Guardian review notes the controversy around the tactic of demanding that someone come out. That tension matters to the documentary’s account of activism, privacy and media attention.

How does the documentary connect the film’s history to the present?
Rollason frames the archive as relevant beyond its original moment. In the official director statement, they say: “With anti-trans rhetoric and attacks on queer rights again intensifying, I hope the film can function not simply as a snapshot of a historical moment, but as a reminder of what collective resistance can look like – and what role art has to play.”
This is Rollason’s stated hope for the documentary, rather than a measured account of current trends. The historical footage supplies a record of artists and activists working in a particular political climate; the director invites audiences to consider what that history means now.

How is Queer Edward II different from Jarman’s 1991 film?
The two films share a subject, but not a form or purpose. Jarman’s feature is a dramatic adaptation of Marlowe’s play, using a staged narrative and stylized political imagery. Rollason’s documentary reconstructs the making of that feature from behind-the-scenes footage and archival material. Watching the documentary offers a view of the production and its surrounding activism; watching Jarman’s film offers the dramatic work itself.
