En los BAFTA Film Awards del 22 de febrero de 2026, John Davidson, activista con síndrome de Tourette, emitió un tic vocal racialmente ofensivo mientras Michael B. Jordan y Delroy Lindo presentaban un premio. El tic fue involuntario; el lenguaje fue ofensivo y causó daño. Qué ocurrió durante la ceremonia

Por qué la BBC emitió el primer incidente
La BBC explicó al comité parlamentario de Cultura, Medios y Deporte que el equipo de transmisión en el lugar no oyó el primer tic en la señal que estaba supervisando. Por eso no tomó conscientemente la decisión de dejarlo en la emisión. La explicación de la cadena es la versión institucional de lo ocurrido, no una conclusión independiente posterior.

El segundo incidente y la confusión durante la edición
La carta de la BBC dice que hubo una segunda ocasión, menos de diez minutos después, durante la entrega del premio a mejor actriz de reparto a Wunmi Mosaku. El equipo sí oyó esa expresión y la eliminó de la versión preparada para la emisión. Cuando llegaron avisos después del segundo incidente, el equipo creyó por error que ya había editado el incidente señalado, sin advertir que el primero seguía en el programa.
La emisión y la retirada de iPlayer
El primer incidente se transmitió por BBC One y el programa permaneció sin editar en iPlayer durante la noche. Según la carta de Tim Davie, director general de la BBC, la dirección autorizó retirarlo el lunes por la mañana y el proceso comenzó a las 11:47. La cadena dijo que editaría la expresión y que investigaba tanto por qué no identificó antes ambos casos como la demora en actuar después de la emisión. ¿Fue intencional?
Según BAFTA, los tics verbales del síndrome de Tourette son involuntarios: la persona no los controla y no expresan necesariamente sus creencias o intenciones. La organización lo formuló así: “Tourette Syndrome causes involuntary verbal tics, that the individual has no control over.” También dijo que esos tics “are in no way a reflection of an individual’s beliefs and are not intentional.”
Reconocer que el tic no fue voluntario no elimina el impacto del lenguaje. BAFTA se disculpó por el daño causado, y Tim Davie dijo en su carta que, aunque el insulto racial fue un tic involuntario asociado a una discapacidad, “it should never have been broadcast.” Añadió: “It was a genuine mistake, and we take full responsibility for our error.”

Qué significa coprolalia
La coprolalia es un tipo de tic vocal que puede incluir palabrotas, insultos u otras palabras socialmente inaceptables. No es sinónimo de síndrome de Tourette ni describe a todas las personas que lo tienen. La Tourette Association of America estima que alrededor del 10–15 % de las personas con Tourette experimentan coprolalia; Associated Press reproduce esa cifra atribuyéndola a la asociación, sin indicar un año de publicación.
La CEO de Tourettes Action, Emma McNally, resumió la distinción entre el efecto de las palabras y su carácter involuntario: “We deeply understand that these words can cause hurt but at the same time, it is vital that the public understands a fundamental truth about Tourette syndrome: tics are involuntary. They are not a reflection of a person’s beliefs, intentions, or character.”

Qué responsabilidad asumió cada organización
BAFTA: preparación y cuidado de los asistentes
Como organizadora, BAFTA asumió responsabilidad por haber colocado a sus invitados en una situación difícil. El 23 de febrero pidió disculpas sin reservas a Jordan, Lindo y las personas afectadas, y dijo que aprendería del incidente.
BBC: emisión, edición y distribución
Como emisora, la BBC respondió por lo que se transmitió y por el programa que quedó temporalmente disponible en iPlayer. Davie escribió al comité parlamentario el 6 de marzo que la expresión no debería haberse emitido y que la cadena asumía plena responsabilidad por el error. Estas son responsabilidades institucionales distintas; las declaraciones citadas no establecen una conclusión sobre responsabilidad legal.

Qué se dijo en antena y qué no está confirmado
El presentador Alan Cumming explicó a la audiencia que el síndrome de Tourette es una discapacidad y que los tics oídos eran involuntarios, y pidió disculpas por el lenguaje ofensivo, según Associated Press. No hay en las fuentes citadas declaraciones directas de Jordan o Lindo sobre su experiencia personal durante el momento, así que no corresponde atribuirles una reacción concreta. Tampoco se debe reconstruir lo que Davidson pensaba o pretendía: las explicaciones disponibles se limitan a la naturaleza involuntaria de los tics.
