Updated September 28, 2026: Putlocker-style mirrors remain unstable and may be unauthorized. The dependable replacements are licensed services—some free with ads, some funded through participating libraries, and some subscription or rental services. Availability varies by country, so this guide uses the United States as its primary reference and recommends checking each title before watching.
This list excludes pirate mirrors, proxy domains, torrent sites, and instructions for bypassing regional restrictions. “Free” means no monthly subscription; advertising, an account, a library card, or title-level rental charges may still apply.

The 10 best Putlocker alternatives
1. Tubi — best overall free replacement
Tubi is the closest legal substitute for Putlocker’s browse-and-play experience. It has no monthly subscription and states that advertising funds its free, legal programming (Tubi’s service explanation). The catalog mixes films, television and genre programming, with titles changing over time.

- Advantages: straightforward on-demand browsing, broad device support, and no paid plan required for the core service.
- Trade-offs: advertisements interrupt playback; the newest theatrical releases are generally absent; catalogs differ by country.
- Start: use the web site or an official app. Tubi lists browser, mobile, Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation and selected smart-TV support at its device page.
2. Pluto TV — best for free live movie channels
Pluto TV combines scheduled, ad-supported movie channels with an on-demand section. It suits viewers who enjoy channel surfing more than selecting any film instantly.
- Advantages: no subscription, familiar linear-TV experience, and additional on-demand choices.
- Trade-offs: channel schedules and rights change; a desired movie may not be playing when you look; availability is country- and device-dependent.
3. The Roku Channel — best mixed free catalog
The Roku Channel offers free movies, shows and live channels, alongside partner and paid listings. Roku documents its free-content areas at its support page. In supported markets it can be used on more than Roku hardware.
- Watch for: distinguish a free listing from a rental, subscription add-on or partner channel before pressing play.
- Best fit: households that want live and on-demand choices in one interface.
4. Plex — best for streaming plus a personal media library
Plex provides a free, licensed streaming catalog in supported regions and can also organize media you legally own through its separate personal-server features.

- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

- Trade-offs: the free catalog is not a guarantee of mainstream or newly released films, and features vary by region and device.
5. YouTube Movies — best for an official rental or purchase
YouTube Movies combines selected free titles with official rentals and purchases. A free account does not make every search result free: confirm whether the specific film is ad-supported, included, rented or purchased.
- Best fit: someone who wants one particular movie now and accepts a title-level charge.
- Safety check: use the official movie listing, not an unexplained upload or a page that redirects to another domain.
6. Kanopy — best ad-free library and university option
Kanopy is available only through participating public libraries, colleges or universities. Eligible users sign in with their institution and may receive a monthly ticket or viewing limit set locally. Its strengths are documentaries, classics and independent cinema rather than guaranteed blockbuster access.
Check participation and the local allowance at Kanopy before relying on it.

10. Premium studio services — choose by the catalog you actually need
Max, Hulu, Disney+ and Paramount+ can be sensible paid substitutes when their current catalogs match your interests. None is universally best, and all rotate titles by country and date. Choose based on the film or franchise you want, advertising tolerance, downloads, household profiles and device support rather than a timeless “largest library” claim.
How to find any movie legally
- Search the title on JustWatch’s U.S. guide (or select your own country). JustWatch is a free discovery service that displays free, subscription, rental and purchase options; it is not the streaming provider.
- Apply the Free, Ads, Subscription, Rent or Buy filters.
- Open the result on the provider’s official website or app. Confirm that it is the correct film, edition, language, subtitles and region.
- Check whether the displayed access is included, a separate premium add-on, or a one-time rental or purchase.
A listing can disappear because rights expired, your country differs, the title is a different cut, or the provider’s page is outdated. Recheck the provider directly when that happens.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are Putlocker mirrors safe or legal?
Putlocker became associated with unauthorized streaming, shutdowns and repeated domain changes. The name has since been reused by unrelated mirrors and copycat sites; no current domain should be assumed official without verifiable ownership and licensing. Historical background is documented at Wikipedia’s Putlocker entry, but a mirror’s branding is not proof of legitimacy.

Prefer licensed ad-supported platforms, paid subscriptions, official rental stores, library services, recognized studio channels and genuinely public-domain archives. A service may be legitimate while an individual user upload is not, so use official movie pages.
- Be wary of promises of every new theatrical film for free, rapidly changing mirror addresses and unexplained redirects.
- Do not grant notification permissions, install unknown browser extensions or APKs, sideload “codecs,” or enter card details into a page unrelated to the provider.
- A credit-card request may indicate a converting free trial, rental checkout or a fraudulent subscription funnel. Read the billing and cancellation terms.
- A VPN can protect privacy on public Wi-Fi, but it does not legalize infringement or guarantee access to another country’s catalog. Ad blockers can also break playback or conflict with service terms.
The Motion Picture Association’s legal viewing guidance explains why using authorized services matters.
Which option fits you?
- Free, searchable movies: start with Tubi.
- Scheduled channels: try Pluto TV.
- Roku-style live and on-demand mix: use The Roku Channel.
- Library or university access: check Kanopy, then Hoopla.
- One unavailable title: use JustWatch, then compare an official rental or purchase.
- Originals and fewer compromises: select a paid service whose current catalog matches your household’s priorities.
If free services have no result
- Check Kanopy and Hoopla if you have eligible library access.
- Run the title through JustWatch with free-with-ads filters.
- Look at official YouTube movie listings.
- Compare legitimate rental prices and terms.
- Search your library’s DVD or Blu-ray collection.
- Wait for the title to rotate onto a subscription service.
The Bottom Line
For a legal Putlocker replacement, begin with Tubi, Pluto TV or The Roku Channel. Use Kanopy or Hoopla when your library participates, and use JustWatch to locate a specific film before paying for a subscription or rental. Avoid mirrors that depend on redirects, unknown downloads or unexplained payment requests.
