There is no single best movie service. Netflix and Max suit subscription households, Disney+ is strongest for families and franchises, Tubi delivers free viewing with ads, and YouTube Movies is usually the simplest way to rent one specific film. This guide compares eight legal options available to U.S. viewers in 2024, separating subscriptions, free ad-supported catalogs, rentals and discovery tools. Prices, catalogs, supported devices and features can change by country and over time.
Quick comparison
| Service | Best for | Model | Ads | Offline viewing | 4K | 2024 U.S. starting price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Broad all-purpose subscription | Subscription | Plan-dependent | Plan- and title-dependent | Higher-tier plan and compatible title/device | Not stated in the supplied official material; verify the offer at signup |
| Amazon Prime Video | Prime households, rentals and add-on channels | Subscription plus transactional titles | Plan- and title-dependent | Included-title and device restrictions apply | Title, plan and device-dependent | Not stated; verify the U.S. offer |
| Max | Warner Bros., prestige and classic films | Subscription | Plan-dependent | Plan-dependent | Plan-, title- and device-dependent | Not stated; verify the U.S. offer |
| Disney+ | Families and major franchises | Subscription | Plan-dependent | Plan- and title-dependent | Plan-, title- and device-dependent | Not stated; verify the U.S. offer |
| Hulu | Movies combined with current television | Subscription and bundles | Plan-dependent | Plan-dependent | Selected titles and plans | Not stated; verify the U.S. offer |
| Peacock | Lower-cost NBCUniversal-related catalog | Subscription; selected free access may vary | Plan-dependent | Plan-dependent | Selected titles and plans | Not stated; verify the U.S. offer |
| Tubi | Free legal movie streaming | Ad-supported | Yes | Generally not a subscription-download service | Title- and device-dependent | Free; advertising and regional limits apply |
| YouTube Movies | Renting or buying one film | Transactional | No recurring subscription for the title | Do not assume offline access; YouTube says viewing requires an internet connection | Resolution and device-dependent | Per-title price shown at checkout |
“Included” means covered by the relevant plan. A search result can also represent a rental, purchase or separate channel subscription.
1. Netflix: best overall subscription
Netflix is the safest default for a household that wants one familiar movie-and-series app, including Netflix originals and licensed films. Its plans differ in resolution, simultaneous streams and download-device limits. The official plan documentation says features, prices, taxes, country, package and extra-member eligibility vary by location; do not transfer prices displayed for another country to the United States. See the current details at Netflix’s plan page.
Higher tiers can provide 4K/HDR when the title, television, connection and device support it. Downloads are not universal: plan level, mobile operating system, title eligibility and device limits all matter. Netflix is a poor value for someone who watches only an occasional movie or dislikes a rotating catalog.

2. Amazon Prime Video: best for Prime households
Prime Video combines movies included with a Prime or Prime Video offer with titles that must be rented or bought. Add-on channels create another layer of paid access. That breadth is useful if you already value other Prime benefits, but the mixed included/rent/buy results can make discovery less straightforward than a tightly curated service. Confirm the U.S. price and exactly which titles are included before subscribing.
3. Max: best for film-focused households
Max is the strongest fit here for viewers prioritizing Warner Bros. releases, prestige cinema and studio or classic-film depth. Choose between its available ad-supported and ad-free plans according to tolerance for interruptions and the features each tier offers. Resolution, downloads, simultaneous viewing and 4K availability depend on plan, title, device and region; movies also rotate as rights change.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
4. Disney+: best for families and franchises
Disney+ centers on Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic, making it an unusually coherent family and franchise service. Profiles and parental controls help shared households. It is less suitable if your priority is adult drama, independent cinema or a broad stream of new theatrical releases. Ad and download features depend on the selected plan and market.
5. Hulu: best general-entertainment companion
Hulu pairs a changing movie selection with current television and is often most compelling in a bundle. Distinguish the on-demand service from Hulu + Live TV: the latter is a different, higher-cost live-television product. Ad-supported and ad-free options differ, and movie availability, downloads and picture quality depend on plan and title. Hulu’s U.S.-centric availability makes it a poor assumption for international readers.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
6. Peacock: best lower-cost studio option
Peacock is a practical choice for selected Universal, Focus Features and NBCUniversal-related movies, with television and sports as additional benefits. Its movie catalog is more volatile and generally narrower than the largest subscription services. Check the current plans page for U.S. pricing, advertising, downloads and premium-resolution details; availability of free or promotional access can change.
7. Tubi: best free legal movie streaming
Tubi charges no monthly subscription and is supported by advertising. That makes it the clearest starting point when avoiding another bill matters more than getting the newest theatrical releases. Expect a rotating catalog, possible registration or regional limits, and fewer premium high-resolution choices than paid services. Other legitimate free options include Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex’s free catalog and Kanopy for users whose participating library or university provides access.

- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
8. YouTube Movies: best for one-off rentals and purchases
YouTube Movies is a store, not an unlimited subscription catalog. In supported countries, including the United States, you can rent or buy individual titles without adding another monthly service. YouTube’s help documentation says rentals generally give you 30 days to start and usually 48 hours to finish after playback begins, although the checkout screen controls when a different period applies. Prices can vary by resolution, and HD/UHD playback requires compatible hardware, title rights and sufficient bandwidth.
YouTube also offers Primetime Channels in selected countries, including the United States; those are separate channel subscriptions. Rental and purchase availability varies by location and can change. The help documentation says viewing requires an internet connection, so do not treat a YouTube rental as a guaranteed offline-download alternative.

How to choose without overspending
Choose a subscription for regular viewing
Netflix is the broad default, Max favors film depth, Disney+ suits families and franchises, Hulu complements television viewing, and Peacock targets selected Universal-related programming. Compare the plan’s ads, streams, downloads and resolution rather than the headline monthly price alone.
Choose free streaming for occasional viewing
Start with Tubi or Pluto TV when ads are acceptable. “Free” means no subscription fee, not unlimited or permanent access: catalogs rotate and geographic, registration, subtitle and picture-quality limits may apply.
Choose a rental for one new release
A single YouTube rental can cost less than adding a monthly subscription you will not use. Check the rental window, resolution and device compatibility at checkout.
Check availability before subscribing
Search the movie on JustWatch first. It is a discovery and availability guide, not the streaming catalog itself. Rights differ by country, titles leave services, and an “available” result may mean included, ad-supported, rented, bought or offered through an add-on channel.

Kodi is free, open-source media-center software available on platforms including Linux, macOS, Windows, iOS, tvOS and Android. Kodi explicitly says it does not provide media content or sources. It can organize personal files and configured services, but third-party add-ons require separate legal and security scrutiny. Kodi itself is not a Netflix-style movie catalog, and a VPN does not make an unlicensed stream lawful.
Quick Recap
What to check before pressing play
- Confirm the service is official and licensed; avoid unofficial APK mirrors and sites that cannot explain their rights.
- Verify your country, because movie rights, prices, payment methods and app availability differ internationally.
- Check whether the title is included, ad-supported, a rental, a purchase or an add-on channel.
- For 4K/HDR, confirm the plan, title, television, HDMI/HDCP chain, app and broadband connection.
- For downloads, confirm the plan, mobile device, title eligibility, expiration and download-device limit.
- Review simultaneous-stream and household rules before sharing an account.
- Cancel monthly plans before the next billing date if you subscribed for a single movie or short-term catalog.
