Pulp Fiction is Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 crime film, co-written with Roger Avary. Its interlocking stories follow hitmen Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega, mob boss Marsellus Wallace’s wife Mia, boxer Butch Coolidge, and a pair of would-be robbers. The stories arrive out of chronological order, making the way they connect part of the film’s design.

These strands intersect through shared characters and events rather than following one continuous protagonist. The Festival de Cannes describes the connected threads through an overdose, a boxer’s father’s watch, and the effort to dispose of a body and a bloodied car. That gives the film both its crime-story stakes and its shifting ensemble focus. Festival de Cannes film record; Miramax film page.
How does the nonlinear structure work?
Pulp Fiction presents three interconnected stories nonlinearly: scenes do not unfold in the order the events happened. The audience assembles the chronology from episodes that revisit characters and situations from different points in the larger story. The British Film Institute identifies the nonlinear, interconnected structure as a defining feature of the film. BFI film record.

- Pulp Fiction (Blu-ray + Digital)
That structure changes the effect of familiar crime-film material. Instead of building only toward a single climax, the film lets one episode alter how another is understood. Its recurring characters and pop-culture references provide connective tissue, while the out-of-order presentation keeps the audience attentive to how each strand fits into the whole. The latter is an interpretation of the film’s form; the BFI specifically notes its references and nonlinear storytelling.
