Clenney maintained that she stabbed Christian Obumseli in self-defense. On August 10, 2026, she pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to six years in prison, with credit for time served, followed by five years of probation. The plea resolved the criminal case without a trial verdict on the broader dispute over who was the aggressor in their relationship.
What happened to Christian Obumseli?
An arrest affidavit says Obumseli died on April 3, 2022, from an apparent stab wound in the Miami apartment he shared with Clenney. The affidavit describes the incident as the subject of an investigation by the City of Miami and the State Attorney’s Office. Read the arrest affidavit continuation.

ABC News, reporting State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle’s account, said the chief medical examiner determined that the chest wound punctured Obumseli’s subclavian artery. That is an attributed account of the medical examiner’s conclusion, not an independent review of the full medical record. ABC News reported on the plea and sentencing on August 10, 2026.
Why did the prosecutor call Clenney the aggressor?
In a statement about the sentence, Fernandez Rundle said prosecutors had focused on evidence that Clenney stabbed Obumseli “as part of a pattern of escalating violence toward him.” WSVN reported that she described the relationship as “extremely tempestuous [and] combative” since November 2020. Those are the prosecution’s characterization and account of the relationship; they should not be mistaken for findings reached by a jury.

The Obumseli family’s wrongful-death lawsuit also accused Clenney of being the aggressor. That was an allegation in a civil case, distinct from the prosecution’s position in the criminal case. WSVN’s August 10, 2026 report quoted Fernandez Rundle’s sentencing statement.
What did Clenney say happened?
Clenney acknowledged causing Obumseli’s injuries but maintained that she acted in self-defense. Before the plea, she said he pushed her and threw her to the floor, and that she then grabbed a knife and threw it from about ten feet away. That is Clenney’s account of the encounter, not a court-established reconstruction of how the stabbing occurred. Court TV summarized her account in its July 31, 2026 report.
Rank #2
The defense continued to assert self-defense after the plea hearing. The prosecution’s account and Clenney’s account therefore remain materially different descriptions of the relationship and fatal encounter; neither should be recast as a jury’s verdict.

Clenney pleaded guilty to manslaughter on August 10, 2026. The sentence was six years in prison, including credit for time served, followed by five years of probation. Fernandez Rundle said the plea meant Obumseli’s family heard Clenney accept full responsibility for his death. That statement describes the prosecutor’s view of the plea; it does not resolve the disputed account of self-defense or establish a jury finding about the relationship’s history. The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office published her sentencing statement on August 10, 2026.

Because the case ended in a guilty plea rather than a jury trial, there was no jury verdict deciding whether Clenney was the aggressor in the relationship. The sentence also does not, by itself, answer the wider factual question raised by the competing accounts.
