The series was delayed after producer Gaumont said it discovered the project was based on Douglas Fairbairn’s novel Shoot and needed to identify rights holders and obtain authorizations.
When did The Hunt premiere on Apple TV?
The Hunt premiered March 4, 2026, rather than arriving as a future release. Apple’s episode listing shows a weekly rollout, while industry coverage reported that two episodes launched on March 4 and the finale arrived April 1, 2026. Why was the series delayed?
Gaumont said it learned in November 2025 that the project, initially presented as an original work, was based on Douglas Fairbairn’s existing novel Shoot. The December 2025 schedule was postponed while the producer identified rights holders and obtained the necessary authorizations. Gaumont now identifies the series as adapted from the novel.

Is The Hunt based on a book?
Yes. Gaumont identifies the series as an adaptation of Fairbairn’s 1973 novel Shoot. The producer also notes an earlier 1976 film adaptation of the book. Those are distinct adaptations; the Apple TV series is the latest screen version identified by Gaumont. Gaumont’s series page
