It is the inward journey of a man trying to endure what has happened to him. “The story actually happens within the person,” he told Scroll.in in a March 18, 2024 interview about Blessy’s Malayalam film Aadujeevitham.
What makes The Goat Life special?
Sukumaran describes the film as a meditative character study: its central drama unfolds inside its protagonist, Najeeb, rather than in the landscapes around him. The desert and Kerala settings may be visually striking, he says, but they are a backdrop to the character’s emotional experience. The film follows one man’s struggle to escape exploitation and survive.

“It’s a deeply meditative character study, and that was that really appealed to me as well as Blessy,” Sukumaran said in his conversation with Scroll.in journalist Nandini Ramnath. He presents that inward focus as the film’s essential idea, not as a claim that scenery or physical survival are unimportant.
How does Sukumaran understand Najeeb’s arc?
Sukumaran says he approached the role in three phases:
#1 Best Overall
- Denial: The character initially resists accepting what has happened.
- Anger: That resistance gives way to anger.
- Coming to terms: He reaches a point of reckoning with a situation he may have to live with.
This is Sukumaran’s interpretation of his performance, not a definitive account of the character or a clinical model. It helps explain why he describes the film as an internal journey even though its story is shaped by physical hardship.
How did the film approach Benyamin’s novel?
Aadujeevitham, released in other languages as The Goat Life, adapts Benyamin’s novel Goat Days. The book was inspired by real-life migrant worker Najeeb Ahmed’s experiences herding livestock in the Saudi Arabian desert. Sukumaran says the novel’s detail made adaptation a matter of selection: the filmmakers could not reproduce every element or every reader’s imagined version of the book, so they chose what to encapsulate on screen.

That choice fits the film’s emphasis on a character’s interior experience. Rather than treating the adaptation as a checklist of incidents from the novel, Sukumaran’s account points to the challenge of conveying the story’s emotional core through cinema.
Why did the film take so long to reach the screen?
In the 2024 interview, Sukumaran described the project as a 16-year journey, beginning when the script reached him in 2008. He said filming began in Jordan in 2018, continued over several years, and was interrupted by a pandemic gap of roughly a year and a half. He also said post-production took about a year. These are his recollections in the interview, not independently audited production records.

- Factory sealed DVD
Sukumaran said that in 2008, the budget and a less developed network for worldwide releases made a film of this scale harder to mount. He also described the later involvement of companies and distributors focused on different territories as part of what made the project more feasible. On technology, his view was that better tools do not automatically make better storytelling: “Technology doesn’t really matter for you to tell a story. I am not a believer that better technology essentially means better storytelling.”
What did Sukumaran say about losing weight for the role?
Sukumaran told Scroll.in that he lost about 31 kilograms before the pandemic break and had to repeat the process when filming resumed. He warned that there was “no healthy way” to lose one-third of his body weight. This is an account of an extreme requirement for a film role, not a safe or generalizable weight-loss method; it should not be treated as health advice.

When and in which languages was the film released?
In the March 2024 interview, Aadujeevitham was described as due for release as The Goat Life in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada on March 28, 2024. Sukumaran said the team wanted audiences to be able to access the film in their own languages. That release information describes the 2024 plan; the interview does not establish current streaming, disc, or other home-viewing availability.
