In PRISM’s desktop Studio Mode, media sources do not start automatically when added. Then check that source’s mixer meter, volume and mute controls, and verify the selected audio devices. These checks can narrow down where audio disappears, but the title alone cannot establish the cause.
1. Make sure the new media source is playing
Start here if the silence began immediately after replacing or re-adding a clip. PRISM’s desktop guide, Using Media Source, says that in Studio Mode media sources do not play automatically after being added.
- If you added the file while in Studio Mode, click Apply to apply the change.
- For automatic playback when the source becomes active, open the media source’s settings and uncheck Restart playback when source becomes active, as described in PRISM’s guide.
- Check that playback has started and that the intended media source is active. A source that has not started cannot send its audio to the stream.
Do not assume this is the diagnosis until you check the source and mixer: a source can be playing while muted, too quiet or routed incorrectly.
2. Check the changed file’s audio in PRISM’s mixer
Open the audio mixer and inspect the controls for the media source itself, not only the microphone. PRISM’s official FAQ explains that volume is controlled by the bars beneath each audio source and that the sound icon toggles mute.

- Look for the new media source’s meter while its video plays. If it does not move, check playback first, then compare the file with the previous one.
- Make sure the source is not muted and its volume is not turned down.
- Check other sources separately. A working microphone does not show that the media source is audible, and a silent media source does not prove that the microphone is misconfigured.
If the source plays and its mixer controls appear correct, play the changed file outside PRISM and check that it has an audible audio track. Compare it with the previous file if available. PRISM’s desktop guidance confirms that Media Source plays local video or audio files, but the available guidance does not establish a particular codec or file-format fault as the cause of missing audio.
3. Verify the selected audio devices and transmitted mix
When audio is missing more broadly, check whether it is muted and whether the intended input and output devices are selected. PRISM’s FAQ documents these checks and describes monitoring transmitted audio via Audio Mixer > Settings > Advanced Audio Settings.

- In PRISM’s audio settings, verify that the selected input and output devices are the ones you intend to use.
- Use the Advanced Audio Settings monitoring option to help determine whether the mix being transmitted contains the expected audio.
- Listen cautiously: if speaker output feeds back into a microphone, or the system repeats the signal, monitoring can cause echo or howling. Stop monitoring if feedback occurs.
Device selection is a different diagnostic branch from whether the new media source is playing. Check the source meter and device settings rather than changing hardware without evidence that it is needed.
4. Separate silence from delay or performance problems
If the symptom is actually stuttering or audio arriving late—not complete silence—PRISM’s desktop guides point to different checks. Optimizing Live Streaming Performance notes that large media files use more CPU and recommends matching media resolution to transmission resolution. Resolving Screen and Audio Sync Issues describes adjusting Sync Offset in milliseconds for timing differences involving external devices. Neither performance tuning nor sync offset, by itself, explains a silent source.

5. Troubleshoot by where the sound disappears

6. Contact PRISM with details that help narrow it down
If these checks do not resolve the problem, use the Help / Contact Us route documented in PRISM’s FAQ. Include:
- Your PRISM Live Studio desktop version and operating system.
- The changed file’s format or codec, if known.
- Whether the media-source meter moves during playback.
- Whether other audio sources, such as a microphone, are audible.
- Whether the changed file plays with sound outside PRISM.
