What was Princess Diana’s net worth? The clearest documented answer is her historical probate value, not a current-style personal net-worth estimate: the executors’ 1998 probate statement recorded a gross estate of £21,711,485 and a net estate of £21,468,352. The grant certificate separately gave £21,468,352 as the gross value of her estate in the United Kingdom. Those labels come from the record itself and should not be conflated.
What was Princess Diana worth when she died?
Diana, Princess of Wales, died in 1997. Her probate grant, dated 2 March 1998, records two related figures in the executors’ sworn statement: £21,711,485 gross estate passing under the grant and £21,468,352 net estate. The grant certificate separately states that the gross value of the estate in the United Kingdom was £21,468,352. The apparent difference in labels is present in the reproduced probate document. It is more accurate to report each line as written than to silently harmonize them or treat the certificate figure as a correction.
Why probate value is not the same as a net-worth estimate
Probate records value an estate for administration after death, while rich-list estimates use their own methods and may describe wealth on a different basis. No verified present-day net-worth figure for Diana is established by these sources. A modern pounds equivalent would require a named inflation index, calculation date, and method; it would be a later calculation, not a figure stated in the probate record.
Who inherited the estate?
Contemporary reporting says Diana’s sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, inherited the bulk of the estate in trust. The will was dated 1 June 1993, followed by a codicil on 1 February 1996.
