Princess Diana’s style moved from youthful London separates to carefully chosen royal and diplomatic dress, then to the relaxed sportswear that became part of her public image. This chronological selection of 38 moments is an editorial guide, not an official ranking: each look stands out for its occasion, design, or place in the story of how she dressed in public.
How Diana’s style changed with her public life
Before her marriage, Diana was photographed in the London clothes now associated with the Sloane Ranger look: corduroy trousers, V-neck sweaters, pie-crust-collar blouses, and gathered skirts. As her public role grew, so did the demands on her wardrobe, from formal royal engagements to overseas visits and charitable appearances. Later, casual athletic clothes became another recognizable part of her image. The London Museum traces that evolution in its account of Diana’s fashion, while FIT’s Fashion History Timeline discusses the influence of her wedding dress.
Her clothes were also a form of public communication. Historic Royal Palaces says fashion professionals helped Diana learn royal dress codes as she entered public life. Designer Jasper Conran recalled her asking what message an outfit would give. For overseas engagements, Catherine Walker put the practical constraint plainly: “I could no more design what I liked than she could wear what she liked. The design had to be right for the occasion.” The following looks are arranged by year, with the documented occasion and designer separated from interpretations of what a garment might have meant.
1981–1984: From early engagements to royal ceremony
1. Ruffled satin for her first public engagement (1981)
At her first public engagement with Prince Charles, Diana wore a black ruffled satin Emanuel dress. Vogue notes that the shoulder-baring silhouette drew front-page attention the next day. It was an early glimpse of how closely her clothes would be scrutinized.

2. The Emanuel wedding gown (1981)
David and Elizabeth Emanuel designed Diana’s wedding gown in silk and taffeta, with lace puff sleeves and a 25-foot train. Its scale made it a defining ceremonial look; FIT’s Fashion History Timeline describes the gown’s rapid influence on wedding fashion.
3. A red coat for her first official maternity appearance (1981)
Vogue identifies Diana’s red fringed Bellville Sassoon coat, accented in blue and yellow, and a John Boyd hat as her first official maternity look. The bright color and trim made this a distinctly public-facing ensemble.
4. The “Lady Di sweater” photograph (1981)
A photograph of Diana in a red Peruvian knitted sweater helped turn an informal look into a commercial sensation. London Museum reports that the shop selling the design received 500 orders after the photoshoot; the owners recalled customers asking for the “Lady Di sweater.” That is the museum’s reported account, not an independently audited sales figure.
5. A formal day dress with a pie-crust collar (early 1980s)
Pie-crust-collar blouses were among the styles associated with Diana’s early London wardrobe. This romantic detail carried into the more formal daywear that suited her emerging public role. London Museum documents the collar as part of her early style; a specific date or single occasion for this look is not established in the cited account.

Diana wore a midnight-blue tulle gown by Murray Arbeid on several occasions, including the Phantom of the Opera premiere, a dinner at Claridge’s, and a Royal Opera House ballet. Rewearing a striking formal gown made this more than a one-night look.
9. The icy-blue Cannes gown (1987)

13. A pale-pink gown in Pakistan (1991)
For a visit to Pakistan, Diana wore a Catherine Walker gown in pale-pink chiffon, with pearl embroidery, a paisley bodice, and a sarong-style skirt. Vogue describes a matching stole in the style of a Pakistani dupatta. The details made the look distinctive while reflecting the visit’s setting.

15. A gathered skirt and V-neck sweater in London
Gathered skirts and V-neck sweaters belonged to Diana’s early London wardrobe, a more informal vocabulary than the gowns and tailored coats of her later public appearances. London Museum records these pieces among the recognizable elements of that early style; the source does not attach them to one dated event.

16. The black silk “Revenge Dress” (1994)
On June 29, Diana wore a figure-hugging, off-the-shoulder black silk dress by Christina Stambolian to a Serpentine Gallery gala. The date coincided with the broadcast of an interview in which then-Prince Charles acknowledged infidelity. The Associated Press reports that Diana paired it with a sapphire necklace, black pumps, and red nail polish. “Revenge Dress” became its popular name; it should not be treated as Diana’s own label or as proof of her private intention. The Associated Press’s 2026 report said Sotheby’s planned a New York auction for December 9, 2026, with a presale estimate of US$150,000–300,000 and an international tour beforehand. That is a future plan and estimate as reported on September 18, 2026, not a completed sale.
17. Biker shorts and an oversized sweatshirt (1995)
During a Harbor House visit, Diana wore white biker shorts, an oversized college sweatshirt, trainers, and a Gucci bag, according to Vogue. The relaxed athletic outfit became a particularly visible example of her casual style. London Museum also describes her public visibility in sportswear, including for gym and school-run routines.

18. Purple Versace at a Chicago gala (1996)
For a Field Museum gala in Chicago, Diana wore a purple Versace gown with Jimmy Choo shoes and a pearl, diamond, and sapphire choker, Vogue reports. The color and jewelry made the ensemble a vivid formal look for the visit.
19. A beaded black gown for her 36th birthday (1997)
At the Tate Gallery for her 36th birthday, Diana wore a black beaded Jacques Azagury gown. Vogue notes that she accessorized with an emerald Queen Mary choker that had been a wedding gift from the Queen.
Why these 38 moments matter
The best-known Diana looks are not all the same kind of fashion statement. The wedding gown and formal evening dresses answered ceremonial expectations; the bright and occasion-specific ensembles gave her wardrobe a role in public and diplomatic life; sportswear and early London separates offered a more relaxed counterpart. Historic Royal Palaces explains that bright colors were chosen for visits to hospitals, children’s homes, hospices, and for meeting children and older people, where they could help Diana connect visually with those she met. That practical purpose sits alongside the visual impact that made particular dresses memorable.
The documented examples in this guide are not a definitive canon of exactly 38 outfits: no source establishes a universal ranking or a fixed set. They show how Diana’s clothing changed with her public responsibilities, and why a single wardrobe could include a taffeta wedding train, a diplomatic chiffon gown, a repeated evening dress, and biker shorts.
