That is a later-reported account of a private conversation, not a scene independently confirmed by contemporary reporting. Neither Charles nor Diana attended the court proceeding.
What was reported about the day?
In coverage of the documentary The Royal Family at War, royal biographer Ingrid Seward recalled what Diana had told her: “She said that on the day of the divorce, she and Charles sat down together on the sofa, and they both cried.” The account is Seward reporting Diana’s story; Seward was not described as a witness to the conversation. The retrospective coverage of Seward’s account does not establish the private encounter independently.
Were they together at court?
No. Contemporary reports say neither Charles nor Diana attended the court proceeding. The Washington Post reported that Diana was at an English National Ballet luncheon while Charles was at Balmoral in Scotland with their sons. The reported sofa conversation and the court hearing are distinct events: the account places a private encounter on the same day, away from court.
When did the divorce become final?
The Royal Family’s official biography gives the divorce date as 28 August 1996: “The Prince and Princess of Wales were divorced on 28 August 1996.” Contemporary reports in The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times say the decree became absolute at 10:27 a.m. London time. The Times reported the proceeding took five minutes and cost $31; that was its account of the 1996 proceeding, not a current fee schedule. The Royal Family’s biography of Diana records that Charles and Diana married on 29 July 1981. The exact dates span 15 years and about a month, though contemporary coverage commonly described the marriage as 15 years.

What changed after the divorce?
Diana remained Diana, Princess of Wales, but no longer used the style Her Royal Highness. These details describe the formal aftermath; they do not verify the reported emotional exchange.
