On 15 September 2024, the Royal Family account and the account of the Prince and Princess of Wales publicly wished Prince Harry a happy 40th birthday. The greetings were described as the first public birthday messages for him from those royal accounts since 2021—not as proof that family relations had been repaired.
What King Charles’s and William’s accounts posted
The Royal Family account shared a photograph of Harry smiling and wrote: “Wishing The Duke of Sussex a very happy 40th birthday today!” The post also included a birthday-cake emoji, according to The Guardian and CBS News.
The Prince and Princess of Wales account reposted the Royal Family message and added: “Wishing a Happy 40th Birthday to The Duke of Sussex!” The two short greetings were similar in tone; the second was a repost with its own wording, rather than a separate birthday photograph. The Guardian and CBS News reported both messages.
Why the birthday posts stood out
Contemporaneous coverage described the posts as the first public birthday greetings for Harry from the royal accounts since 2021. The phrasing matters: Sky News noted a separate 2022 X post that mentioned Harry among younger royals during a Windsor walkabout after Queen Elizabeth II’s death. That was a public mention, but not a birthday greeting. Sky News makes that distinction.

The greetings arrived amid widely reported strain in Harry’s relationships with his father and brother. Coverage also cited Harry and Meghan’s 2020 departure from formal royal duties. Those details are context supplied by contemporaneous reporting, not explanations given in the posts. A public birthday message confirms that the accounts published greetings; by itself, it does not show what the senders privately intended or establish reconciliation. The Guardian and ITV News described the strained family context.

In comments released to the BBC ahead of his birthday, Harry said: “I was anxious about 30, I’m excited about 40.” He added: “Whatever the age, my mission is to continue showing up and doing good in the world.” These were his reflections on the milestone, not a response to the royal accounts’ posts. CBS News reported the statement.
Harry also spoke about fatherhood in the same statement: “Becoming a father of two incredibly kind and funny kids has given me a fresh perspective on life, as well as sharpening my focus in all my work.” He continued: “Being a dad is one of life’s greatest joys and has only made me more driven and more committed to making this world a better place.” CBS News quoted his remarks.
