Prince William and Kate, the Prince and Princess of Wales, won a French privacy case against the publisher of Paris Match over paparazzi photographs of their family on a private ski holiday in the French Alps. News reports say the court found that the article and images infringed the couple’s and their three children’s privacy and image rights; the reported remedy included legal costs and a notice acknowledging the breach.
What happened in the case?
Paris Match published an article with paparazzi photographs of the Wales family during a private holiday in the French Alps. The images were described in news coverage as showing the family on the ski slopes and relaxing on a chalet balcony. The case concerned the couple and their three children, whose image rights were included in the reported finding. The Associated Press account and Sky News coverage identify the magazine and the family holiday at issue.
What did the court decide, and what was the remedy?
Reports say the Nanterre Judicial Court found that the article and photographs infringed the family’s privacy and image rights. AP reported that a notice in the latest edition of Paris Match said the court found the material had infringed respect for the family’s private life and the image rights of the Prince and Princess and their children. That wording is AP’s account of the notice, not a quotation from the judgment itself. AP’s report describes the notice; The Independent and Sky News report the ruling and remedy.
The reported remedy included payment of the couple’s French legal costs and publication of a formal notice acknowledging the breach. The original judgment was not available in the reports cited here, so the court’s detailed legal reasoning, any damages amount, and appeal status are not established by those accounts.

How this differs from the 2012 Closer case
This case is separate from the 2012 French privacy dispute involving Closer. That earlier matter concerned topless photographs of Catherine taken while she was sunbathing in Provence. The 2025 case concerned photographs of William, Kate and their children during a family ski holiday, published by Paris Match. AP’s report distinguishes the two episodes, while the Leveson Inquiry report provides historical context for the earlier press episode.
The 2025 outcome should be understood as a ruling in this particular dispute. The reporting cited here does not establish that it automatically decides how other privacy cases would be resolved.
