Prince Harry’s major lesson was that meaningful change is difficult—and that commitment matters most when progress gets hard. He shared that message in Shanghai on May 26, 2025, while speaking about sustainable tourism and climate change.
Why did Prince Harry go to Shanghai?
Harry made an unannounced visit to Shanghai, described in contemporaneous reporting as his first visit to China. He spoke at Trip.com Group’s Envision 2025 Summit and hosted a Travalyst Executive Summit in the city, according to Yahoo’s May 26, 2025 report republishing InStyle.
The two gatherings had related but distinct roles: Trip.com Group organized the tourism summit where Harry spoke, while Travalyst was the sustainability-focused tourism initiative with which he held an executive meeting. Reports described his remarks in the context of climate change, tourism’s environmental effects and the role businesses can play in sustaining greener practices.
What major lesson did Harry say he had learned?
“Challenges will undoubtedly rise. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my life, it’s that meaningful change never comes easily,” Harry said, according to The Standard’s May 27, 2025 report, which carried PA Wire reporting.

He followed that thought with: “The true measure of our commitment is how we respond when the path becomes difficult. We must never give up.” The lesson was not that change is guaranteed or effortless; it was a call to persist when work toward a goal meets resistance.
How did he connect the lesson to sustainable tourism?
Harry linked persistence to the mixed effects tourism can have on places and people. He said: “I’ve had the privilege of working in conservation for more than 20 years and I’ve witnessed first-hand how tourism can be both a catalyst for positive change and a source of environmental and cultural strain.”

That tension is central to the speech’s sustainability theme: tourism can contribute to positive change, but it can also put pressure on the environment and local cultures. The reports framed his message as a reason for businesses to keep working on greener approaches even when doing so becomes difficult. They do not establish specific policy commitments or describe a particular travel practice announced at the event.

The reports describe Travalyst, founded by Harry in 2019, as a sustainability-focused tourism initiative or coalition. His Shanghai appearance connected that work with a wider tourism industry event, but the available coverage does not provide a complete transcript or a detailed account of what was discussed at the executive summit.
