The franchise is Stargate, launched by the 1994 film. The latest reported status is more complicated than “moving forward”: a January 2026 report described production plans for Martin Gero’s new series, but CinemaBlend reported on June 3 that Prime Video had decided not to proceed with that project. Amazon’s official franchise guide still describes the series as greenlit, so the public accounts conflict and Amazon’s current position is not confirmed by the available sources.
Is the new Stargate series still happening?
There is no clear, current official answer in the available public statements. Amazon’s franchise guide continues to call the series greenlit and identifies Martin Gero as its creator. In contrast, CinemaBlend reported on June 3, 2026, that Prime Video had opted not to proceed with Gero’s project and was resetting its search for a Stargate pitch while continuing to explore the franchise’s future.
Those statements concern different things: the fate of one proposed series and Amazon’s broader interest in Stargate. The official guide’s continued greenlight language has not caught up with the reported reversal, and the sources do not establish whether Amazon has since approved a replacement project. Treat the Gero series as reportedly halted, not as a confirmed current production.
What did the January production update actually say?
On January 31, 2026, ComicBook.com reported that London would be the main production hub and that episodes would be shot around the world. These are details from that secondary report; Amazon’s official guide confirms the greenlight and Gero’s creative role, but does not provide those production plans.

The January update therefore described how the proposed series might be made, not proof that filming had begun. The later June report changed the outlook for that specific project.
What happened to Martin Gero’s Stargate reboot?
CinemaBlend’s June account said Prime Video had chosen not to move forward with Gero’s series. It also described an alleged rationale that the project did not offer broad enough appeal, pointing to a Variety report. Because that Variety story was not accessible for independent review, the rationale should be treated as reported rather than as an established Amazon explanation.

Joseph Mallozzi, identified by CinemaBlend as a former Stargate showrunner and consulting producer, disputed that characterization: “Nope. No. Sorry. Gonna have to push back on this. We were ever mindful of creating a show that would have broad appeal.” His response is evidence of his disagreement, not confirmation of the studio’s reasoning.
CinemaBlend also reproduced Mallozzi’s longer description of the project: “Creator Martin Gero developed a new Stargate series over two years, ultimately crafting a show that offered a fresh jumping-on point for new viewers while deeply respecting existing canon. It was a series that avoided the pitfalls of several modern remakes and reboots by fully embracing the core of its predecessors: action, adventure, exploration, wonder, heart, humor, and found family. And based on that creative vision, the new Stargate series was greenlit in November of 2025.” This is Mallozzi’s account of the project, not an Amazon statement.

Why a new Stargate series matters
The original Stargate film arrived in 1994. Its central idea is an ancient ring that opens a wormhole to another Stargate, making near-instant travel between planets possible. In the franchise, human teams use the portals to explore distant worlds, blending military action, mythology and science-fiction adventure.
That premise can support a new story without requiring viewers to know every previous mission, while the established history gives returning fans a deep canon to draw on. Amazon’s official guide confirms the creative team and greenlight announcement, but does not establish a plot, cast or release date for the proposed series.
