Prime Video’s Scarpetta is based on Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta crime novels, but its first season is not an adaptation of all 29 books. The season draws on the first novel, Postmortem (1990), and the much later Autopsy (2021), according to the Associated Press. The series premiered March 11, 2026, and Amazon currently lists it as streaming.
Which books is Scarpetta based on?
The reported source books for season one are Postmortem, Cornwell’s first Kay Scarpetta novel, and Autopsy, published in 2021. The pairing connects the beginning of the long-running series with a much later installment; it does not mean the screen season retells every book or follows one novel page by page. The Associated Press describes the season as drawing on both titles.
Amazon describes the television series as a crime thriller based on Cornwell’s best-selling Kay Scarpetta novels. Its official series listing says the show is streaming on Prime Video. Amazon’s March 2026 release guide gives March 11, 2026 as the premiere date.
How the screen adaptation relates to the novels
The show’s two-book source frame gives season one a broader span than a straightforward adaptation of the opening novel alone. The books offer a different experience: a novel-by-novel progression through Scarpetta’s cases and the franchise’s changing timeline. The available reporting identifies the two source novels but does not establish a detailed episode-to-chapter map, so viewers should not assume a precise one-to-one match.

Start with Postmortem to read from the beginning
Postmortem is the first Kay Scarpetta novel and the clearest starting point for readers who want to follow the series from its beginning. Reading it first provides the original entry into the character and franchise; it does not guarantee that the show preserves every plot or character detail from the book.
Read Autopsy for the later source novel
Autopsy is the later source identified for season one. It was published in 2021, decades after Postmortem. Readers choosing between the two can begin at the start of the book series with Postmortem, or read the later novel specifically connected to the adaptation.

How many Kay Scarpetta books are there?
“29-book” describes the franchise count used in the series’ framing, not a permanent total. In its March 10, 2026 report, the Associated Press said Cornwell was writing a 30th Kay Scarpetta book, centered on a serial poisoner. The same AP report attributed more than 120 million copies sold worldwide to the series. Both figures are dated reporting, not timeless totals.
What Cornwell’s involvement tells viewers—and what it doesn’t
The Associated Press reported that Cornwell was heavily involved in the adaptation. Discussing the actors’ interpretations of her characters, she said: “I’m learning things from them.” AP also reported that Cornwell said she could picture Jamie Lee Curtis and hear Nicole Kidman while working on her books. Nicole Kidman plays Kay Scarpetta, while Jamie Lee Curtis plays Scarpetta’s sister, Dorothy Farinelli.

An author’s involvement and enthusiasm for a cast provide useful context, but they do not establish that the screen version is faithful in every plot, timeline, or character detail.
