Prime Video announced on February 27, 2026, that its live-action God of War series had begun production, alongside a first-look image of Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus. That image shows the original casting, not the latest reported one: Variety said on August 21 that Dave Bautista had officially taken over the role of Kratos after Hurst suffered an on-set bicep injury.
What the first-look image showed
The image released with the production announcement featured Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus. Prime Video’s promotional caption, reproduced by Game Informer, read: “Behold your first look at Kratos and Atreus in the God of War series now in production.” The announcement came from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios on February 27, 2026.
It is a dated first look from the production’s earlier phase. Hurst was subsequently replaced as Kratos, so the image should not be read as showing the current reported casting.
Who is playing Kratos now?
Variety reported on August 21, 2026, that Dave Bautista was officially set to play Kratos. The report said Hurst, whose casting had been announced in January, suffered a torn bicep on set and required surgery. Amazon and Sony chose to recast rather than push the production restart into 2027.

That casting update does not change what the February image documents: Hurst was the Kratos performer when the first look was released. The sources cited here do not report a change to Callum Vinson’s casting as Atreus.
Production status and season order
The February 27 announcement said production had begun. After the recasting, Variety reported that production was expected to resume in the coming weeks. That was an expectation stated in the August 21 report, not confirmation that filming later restarted; the available reports do not establish a subsequent restart.
