Absentia is a completed psychological thriller about an FBI agent who vanishes while pursuing a serial killer, is declared dead, and turns up alive six years later. The former Prime Video series has three seasons and 30 episodes. Its arrival on Netflix produced a burst of attention: Tom’s Guide reported that it reached No. 3 on the service after its November 14, 2025 debut. That is a historical chart position, not evidence of its current rank or total audience.
What is Absentia about?
Stana Katic stars as FBI agent Emily Byrne. While tracking a serial killer, Emily disappears and is presumed dead. Six years later, she is found alive, with no memory of her captivity. Her husband has remarried and her son has grown up without her; as Emily tries to rebuild her life and find out who held her, a new string of murders draws her into another investigation. Tom’s Guide’s November 2025 account describes the show’s premise and Netflix chart rise.

Why is it being called a Netflix streaming sensation?
Absentia was not newly made for Netflix. It began as a Prime Video original; Netflix licensed all three seasons for a multi-territory release beginning November 14, 2025, according to What’s on Netflix. Tom’s Guide reported that the series reached No. 3 on Netflix after arriving. The report did not give a viewing-hours or view-count total, nor say how long it held that position, so the ranking supports a short-lived chart headline—not a claim about sustained popularity or audience size.
How long is the binge?
The series ran from 2017 to 2020 and comprises three seasons and 30 episodes, as reported by What’s on Netflix. That makes it a finite series rather than an open-ended procedural. The mystery of Emily’s disappearance and her return supplies the central hook, while the family upheaval and new crimes drive the story forward.

Was Absentia cancelled, and does it have an ending?
Tom’s Guide reports that the series was cancelled in 2021. Its November 2025 coverage says Katic, the lead actor and an executive producer, described the story as planned for three seasons; a fourth season was considered, but the team did not find a direction that felt true to the story. The third season wraps up key storylines while leaving open the possibility of more. In other words, the series has a three-season conclusion, though not every element is presented as definitively closed.
