Amazon’s 9 September 2026 announcement says all three are expected to stream globally on Prime Video from 2027. The titles and formats have been corroborated by Variety Australia/New Zealand; its report also places the launches from 2027.
What is Free Spirits: The Backpacker Poisonings about?
The three-part series, whose title is still identified as a working title, concerns eight young backpackers from around the world, including two Australians, who travelled through Southeast Asia in late 2024. According to Amazon’s announcement, after a night out in Laos, six died and one of the two survivors was left permanently blind.
Amazon says the series will draw on the backpackers’ own footage and final messages, as well as testimony from a survivor and victims’ families. Cineflix is producing the series for Amazon MGM Studios.

What is Madness of Three about?
Madness of Three is a five-part docuseries about the 2022 murders in Wieambilla, Queensland. Amazon describes it as examining conspiracy, delusion, and online influence in the actions of Nathaniel, Stacey, and Gareth Train. Blackfella Films is producing it for Amazon MGM Studios.
What will The Test Season Four cover?
The fourth season of the cricket documentary series follows the Australian men’s Test team through a return to South Africa, a five-Test series in India, the 150th Anniversary Test, and the 2027 Ashes. Cricket Australia, Whooshka Media, and Amazon MGM Studios are named as producers.

When will the new Australian documentary series launch?
Amazon says the three commissions are expected from 2027, but no exact release dates are stated in the announcement or the corroborating coverage. They are upcoming productions, not titles confirmed as available to stream now.

Sarah Christie, head of Australian and New Zealand Originals at Amazon MGM Studios, said, “We strongly believe that to be successful globally, you need to be successful locally”. Amazon said the commissions reflect its stated commitment to Australian stories, including sporting events and true-crime cases. The announcement also said Prime Video had commissioned 34 Australian Prime Originals since 2019.
