What happens in the finale?
In “The Verdict,” the season 1 finale, the jury finds Rusty not guilty of Carolyn’s murder. That legal result does not settle every question about his conduct. After the trial, Rusty tells Barbara what he did after discovering Carolyn’s body, and the family learns that Jaden killed her.
Apple lists the episode as season 1, episode 8, released July 24, 2024, with a 50-minute runtime. Its official synopsis reads, “The truth behind Carolyn’s murder is revealed.” Apple TV’s episode listing

The story ties the killing to Jaden’s reaction to the pregnancy revelation. It does not establish a broader psychological diagnosis, and the scene should not be read as evidence for one.
Why was Rusty acquitted?
At trial, Rusty argues that although he had an affair with Carolyn and behaved obsessively, he did not kill her. The prosecution points to the affair and his behavior as evidence against him. The jury returns a not-guilty verdict. That is the jury’s legal decision, not proof that Rusty was truthful about everything he did. TheWrap’s ending explainer

What did Rusty do to the crime scene?
After finding Carolyn already dead, Rusty tied her up to make the scene resemble the Bunny Davis case. He tells Barbara that he did it because he suspected she might have killed Carolyn and wanted to protect her. His confession explains why his actions looked incriminating, but it also reveals that he deliberately interfered with the scene.
Rusty says he used a tracker to discover that Barbara’s car was at Tommy’s home when the poker was left there. He then realizes Barbara was not the person driving. Jaden’s confession supplies the answer: she was the one who killed Carolyn.

Once Jaden admits what happened, Rusty tells her they will not speak of the killing again. He chooses to protect his daughter rather than expose her confession. The result is a sharply divided ending: Rusty leaves court acquitted, while the family knows the killer’s identity and keeps it from the public.

The Apple TV series adapts Scott Turow’s 1987 bestselling novel, which was also adapted into the 1990 film starring Harrison Ford as Rusty. The Television Academy describes the television version as adding new twists; the change in the killer reveal is the key point for viewers comparing versions. The available account supports that broad contrast, not a detailed scene-by-scene comparison. Television Academy’s interview about the finale
