The term means “wives and girlfriends,” but it is a tabloid label, not a profession or a measure of anyone’s importance. A fair list would need to verify both a person’s relationship and their partner’s Premier League status, then explain why each person is included without ranking them by appearance or notoriety.
What does “WAG” mean?
“WAG” is shorthand for the wives and girlfriends of footballers. The Guardian has described it as a tabloid diminutive, a framing that can reduce people to their connection with a player. It does not tell you what someone does, how they identify, or whether they want public attention.
Qualitative research from the University of Manchester on partners of elite male footballers in England describes lives that include work, businesses and caring responsibilities. That is a useful corrective to treating partners as a single celebrity category: each person has an identity and public life beyond a relationship.
Why a definitive top 10 would be misleading
“Top” implies a shared measure, but there is no objective or respectful way to rank people in this group. Appearance, social-media following and tabloid attention are not measures of personal worth. A responsible editorial selection could instead explain its criteria: a verified connection to a current Premier League player, the person’s own public profile or work, and reliable public reporting.

#1 Best Overall
The Premier League’s summer 2026 feature provides a 2026/27-season frame and mentions weddings and other off-season activities, but it is not a complete directory of players’ partners or a ranked list. Relationship status and club membership can change, so any named list needs current confirmation rather than assumptions or rumor.
What reliable reporting can establish
Murillo and Mabili
A Premier League feature published on 1 April 2026 identifies Mabili as Murillo’s wife and reports that they welcomed their daughter Serena in early 2025. Those are details attributed to the league’s feature, not a basis for ranking either person or claiming a definitive current list: A Day in the Life with Murillo.
Rank #2
Sandro Tonali and his partner
In a 2025 interview, Newcastle United recounted Tonali referring to his partner as his wife in Newcastle and mentioned that the couple were expecting a child in early 2026. This is the club’s account at that time, not independent confirmation of their present circumstances: Sandro Tonali opens up on life at Newcastle.
Coleen and Wayne Rooney—and the tabloid context
A September 2026 Guardian interview discusses Coleen and Wayne Rooney’s marriage and the Wagatha Christie case. It offers context for the label’s place in British tabloid coverage; it does not make them a current Premier League player-and-partner example: Coleen and Wayne Rooney on marriage, mistakes and making reality TV.

How to read a list of Premier League players’ partners
- Check that the player is currently in the Premier League, and that the relationship information comes from reliable, recent public reporting.
- Attribute personal or family details to the source that reported them; do not present an old account as confirmation of present status.
- Describe people through their own public work or self-description when that information is reliably available.
- Leave out private details and claims based only on rumor. If a person’s public profile or the sourcing does not support inclusion, do not fill a quota.
