Predator: Badlands shifts the franchise’s point of view to Dek, a young Yautja on a perilous hunt, and pairs him with Thia, a damaged Weyland-Yutani synth. Their unlikely partnership gives the film a more playful, heartfelt buddy-adventure shape—but the dangerous world of Genna, intense action and reported gruesome violence keep it far from a family comedy.
Why Predator: Badlands feels different
The change begins with who gets to be the protagonist. Dek is a young Yautja, the species known for hunting in the franchise, but here he is framed as an unconventional underdog undertaking a dangerous hunt. Instead of centering the story on humans trying to survive a Predator, the film follows a Yautja trying to survive his own mission.
Director Dan Trachtenberg described the premise as “like Chewbacca and C-3PO, the movie.” That comparison points to the contrast at the center of the film: Dek and Thia are an unlikely pair whose different strengths and perspectives can drive both humor and companionship. Thia is a damaged synth tied to Weyland-Yutani, the corporation associated with the wider science-fiction universe.
Genna makes survival part of the adventure
Dek crash-lands on Genna while pursuing a large creature called the Kalisk. The planet’s flora and fauna pose threats of their own, so the hunt is not simply a contest between one hunter and one target. The setting makes resourcefulness and survival central to the story, while giving Dek and Thia a reason to rely on each other.

SAFRA describes their partnership through themes of survival and belonging. That gives the film’s lighter side an emotional underpinning: the pairing is not only a source of comic contrast but also a story about an outsider finding connection.
Lighthearted does not mean bloodless or harmless
The buddy-adventure framing marks a tonal shift, not an absence of danger. The set-visit report describes intense action and gruesome violence. Producer Ben Rosenblatt said, “We don’t have any humans in the movie, and so we don’t have any human red blood,” while also describing the production’s ability to pursue “some pretty awesomely gruesome stuff.” Those are production comments, not a content rating or a guarantee that the violence will feel mild.

It is more accurate to call Badlands more playful or heartfelt than to call it a comedy. Predator films do not all share one uniform tone, and the available reporting does not establish a scene-by-scene ranking against earlier entries. The useful distinction is the balance: this story foregrounds a mismatched partnership and an underdog protagonist while retaining peril, action and violent creature encounters.
