The Vatican suspended the canonization of Carlo Acutis planned for 27 April, but it did not cancel the Jubilee of Teenagers: several prayer, pilgrimage and Mass events went ahead, while a musical celebration was cancelled. The conclave was scheduled to begin on 7 May. Acutis was ultimately canonized by Pope Leo XIV on 7 September 2025.
What happened to the planned canonization?
Francis died at the Domus Sanctae Marthae on 21 April 2025 at 07:35. The Holy See announced that the Eucharistic celebration and rite of canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis, both scheduled for 27 April during the Jubilee of Teenagers, were suspended. The notice described the planned rite as suspended, not permanently cancelled. The Holy See’s announcement of 21 April 2025 specified that the date was the Second Sunday of Easter, or Divine Mercy Sunday.
Francis had said on 24 November 2024 that he would canonize Acutis during the following year’s Jubilee of Adolescents. The planned April ceremony therefore formed part of the Jubilee programme before the pope’s death.
Which Jubilee 2025 celebrations went ahead?
The Jubilee of Teenagers was not cancelled wholesale. The Vatican confirmed the event in its original programme, with changes to individual activities during the mourning period. The Jubilee press note said the 27 April Mass would proceed without Acutis’s canonization.
