Yes. Pope Francis died on 21 April 2025, aged 88. The Vatican’s death declaration lists stroke, coma and irreversible cardiovascular collapse as the immediate cause; it also records a serious respiratory illness earlier in the year. Those are distinct parts of the medical record, not evidence that pneumonia alone caused his death.

The same declaration records a previous episode of acute respiratory failure in the context of bilateral multimicrobial pneumonia. It also lists multiple bronchiectasis, arterial hypertension and type II diabetes among his medical conditions. The declaration distinguishes these conditions from the certified immediate cause of death, so it is not accurate to say simply that pneumonia caused his death or that the official record gives “heart failure” as the cause.
What happened during his final health crisis?
The Associated Press report of 21 April 2025 says Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on 14 February for a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia. The Vatican death declaration supplies the certified cause of death; the AP account provides context for the preceding hospitalization.

Who was Pope Francis?
Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 17 December 1936. The Holy See biography identifies him as the 266th pope and records his election on 13 March 2013, when he was 76. The AP described him as the first Latin American pope.
The Vatican biography lists Laudato si’ (2015), an encyclical concerning care for creation and human responsibility in the climate crisis, among his principal documents. These documented milestones offer context for his papacy without, by themselves, settling assessments of his contested legacy.
