What the headline refers to
The headline comes from Ben Sledge’s article for TheGamer, listed as published on October 14, 2024. Its wording links a story associated online with leaked Pokémon material to the Vaporeon copypasta, a pre-existing fan meme. The article’s body is not available in the sources reviewed here, so its precise argument cannot be verified.
Know Your Meme documents the Octillery story as a meme that spread in mid-October 2024. Its summary describes a story involving a man and Octillery having a child. That is a description of the meme’s premise, not independent authentication of the underlying text or file.
What Game Freak officially confirmed
In a notice dated October 10, 2024, Game Freak said a third party accessed a company server without authorization in August and that personal information was leaked. The company reported 2,606 affected personal-data items concerning employees and contract workers, including former workers; the notice identified names and company email addresses. That figure counts personal-data items, not Pokémon documents, leaked stories, or people who encountered the Octillery meme.

Game Freak apologized: “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused to all involved.” The notice does not mention Octillery, Vaporeon, or the story’s authenticity. A contemporaneous PC Gamer report likewise distinguished confirmation of the hack from confirmation that particular Pokémon materials circulating online came from it.
Why “official” is not the same as canon

- Leak-associated: The Octillery story circulated alongside material attributed to the Game Freak breach.
- Authenticated: Game Freak verified that this specific story file came from its server. The company’s notice does not do that.
- Official or canon: Game Freak approved the story or made it part of Pokémon’s published continuity. The available sources do not establish that.
So “official Vaporeon copypasta” works as a provocative comparison between two pieces of Pokémon-related internet lore. It should not be read as a company endorsement or a canon designation. The Vaporeon copypasta itself is a fan meme; the available sources do not establish an original author or first-publication date for it.

It does not prove that the two texts share an author, origin, or official status. Nor does the story’s appearance in leak-related discussion establish when it was written, who wrote it, whether it was a draft, or whether it was ever intended for a game.

The most accurate shorthand is that an Octillery story became a leak-related meme in October 2024, while Game Freak confirmed a server intrusion and exposure of employee data. The company did not authenticate that individual story.
