There is no single definitive English translation of Shervin Hajipour’s protest song “Barāye” in the sources available here. A Scroll.in feature compares five poems by different translators, whose choices—from “because” and “for” to “in the name of”—give the recurring refrain distinct meanings and sounds.
What “Barāye” means—and why the refrain matters
“Barāye” is a song by Iranian singer-songwriter Shervin Hajipour, written in support of protests in Iran in fall 2022. The Recording Academy describes it as an anthem for a movement led by women and young people. The Persian word at its center can be rendered in English as “because” or “for,” among other choices; the five poems published by Scroll.in make different decisions about how that refrain should work in English.
That decision is more than a vocabulary swap. “Because” emphasizes a reason; “for” can sound like a dedication or a cause; “in the name of” evokes an invocation. Each can orient a reader differently toward the lines that follow. Those distinctions describe visible choices in the published poems, rather than proof that one version is more faithful. The workshop behind the feature brought together translators with varying levels of Farsi competence. Vighnesh Hampapura says they considered the lines’ “tenors, textures, intents, and movements”—a useful description of the work involved when a repeated word must carry both sense and poetic force.

How the poems handle images and political context
The refrain is only one point of comparison. The source feature also lets readers notice how each poem handles specific images and references, including the trees on Vali’asr Street, the cheetah Pirooz, Afghan children, and the closing slogan “woman, life, freedom.” Such details root the song in concrete concerns rather than leaving its protest language abstract. In English, choices around naming, rhythm, and line breaks can preserve an image, clarify it, or shift its emphasis.
For example, the headings themselves establish different expectations: “Azaadi” makes freedom the lens from the outset, while “In the name of” suggests a series of invocations. The “because” version’s conversational phrasing brings the repeated reasoning closer to everyday speech. These are different poetic approaches; the feature does not provide an authoritative, line-by-line Persian adjudication that would establish which is most accurate.

Why “Barāye” reached an international audience
The Recording Academy recognized “Barāye” with its inaugural Best Song For Social Change Special Merit Award, announced at the 65th Grammy Awards on February 5, 2023. The Academy says the award recognizes songwriters whose work has profound social influence and impact. It reported an estimated 40 million social-media views for the song and more than 110,000 submissions for “Barāye” in the inaugural award process; those figures are the Academy’s 2023 reporting, not independent measures of the song’s reach. The Academy’s CEO, Harvey Mason jr., said, “We are humbled to be able to recognize Shervin and ‘Baraye’ as the first recipient of the Best Song For Social Change Special Merit Award.” That recognition helps explain the song’s wider public context, but it does not settle the literary question of how to translate it.

Which translation is most accurate?
The available sources do not establish a single most accurate version. Scroll.in offers five credited poetic interpretations and describes the translators’ attention to meaning, texture, intention, and movement; it does not publish an accuracy score or a verdict from a named Persian-language expert. Readers can compare what each version does with the refrain, the images, and the closing slogan, but choosing a preferred poem is not the same as proving it is the closest translation.
For a close reading, compare a short passage in each version and ask what its English wording emphasizes: cause, dedication, invocation, or freedom; whether its phrasing sounds conversational or ceremonial; and what happens to its images and rhythm. That approach respects both the political force of the song and the distinct literary decisions made by its translators.
